Disneyland in the Rain: Best Indoor Rides, Attractions and Tips

Wondering what to do at Disneyland in the rain?

Don’t let a little wet weather ruin your plans! There are plenty of indoor rides, attractions, restaurants and other places to stay dry at Disneyland and Disney California Adventure.

As a longtime Disneyland Magic Key holder who has visited the parks hundreds of times, I’ve experienced my share of rainy Disney days. And while sunshine is always nice, I’ve found that visiting Disneyland in the rain can actually have some advantages, including cooler temperatures and sometimes smaller crowds.

Based on our experience, here are the best ways to enjoy Disneyland when it’s raining, plus practical tips for making the most of a rainy day.

Disneyland in the Rain

Have you ever heard the song “It Never Rains in Southern California”? Well guess what – it does! Especially in the wintertime. And if you’re Disney-bound when there is rain in the forecast, it’s best to have a game plan in mind so you won’t be caught off guard when the sky opens up.

Personally, I don’t mind visiting Disneyland in the rain. Cool, wet weather keeps the crowds at bay. And there is plenty to do inside the parks that you don’t need sunny skies to enjoy.

Does Disneyland Close When It Rains?

You may be wondering if Disneyland stays open when it rains, and I am happy to say that the Disneyland Resort almost never closes due to weather!

Disneyland and Disney California Adventure generally remain open when it rains. Most indoor rides and attractions continue operating, and even some outdoor attractions stay open during light rain.

However, certain outdoor rides may temporarily close during heavy rain, lightning or other severe weather. Attractions such as Alice in Wonderland, Storybook Land Canal Boats and Goofy’s Sky School are among those that may need to close.

Parades, fireworks and outdoor entertainment may also be canceled or modified depending on weather conditions.

The best advice? Keep an eye on the Disneyland app throughout the day for current wait times and entertainment updates.

Things to Do When it Rains at Disneyland

From classic indoor attractions to cozy places to grab a bite, here are my favorite places you can go to weather the storm.

1. The Enchanted Tiki Room

Located in Adventureland, Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room is one of my favorite places to escape the rain at Disneyland.

Disneyland Enchanted Tiki Room
Escape the rain in the Enchanted Tiki Room.

Opened in 1963, this classic attraction was the first to feature Disney’s groundbreaking Audio-Animatronics technology. During the approximately 15-minute show, tropical birds, colorful flowers and tiki statues come to life in a “swinging 15-minute South Seas musical celebration.”

The theater is completely indoors, making it a wonderful place to get off your feet, dry off and enjoy a little Disney nostalgia.

While you are waiting for the show to begin treat yourself to a Pineapple Dole Whip at the Tiki Juice Bar. (Or go next door and buy one at The Tropical Hideaway!) Just because it’s raining doesn’t mean you should miss out on this iconic tropical treat. It is one of our absolute favorites!

2. Explore the Main Street Opera House

One of my favorite places to escape the rain at Disneyland is the Main Street Opera House, located near the park entrance on Main Street, U.S.A.

This historic theater is a must-visit for Disney history fans like me! Even if you’re not planning to watch a show, it’s worth stepping inside to explore the fascinating exhibits celebrating Walt Disney and the history of Disneyland Park.

In 2025, the Opera House underwent a major transformation as part of Disneyland’s 70th anniversary celebration, introducing a brand-new attraction, Walt Disney – A Magical Life.

The approximately 17-minute presentation tells the story of Walt Disney’s life and extraordinary achievements, culminating in a visit to his office, where a remarkably lifelike Audio-Animatronics figure of Walt himself comes to life.

The theater also presents the longtime Disneyland classic Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln, which features an Audio-Animatronics Abraham Lincoln. The two presentations share the theater and are offered at different times throughout the day – currently with Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln in the morning and Walt Disney – A Magical Life running from 2 p.m. until the park closes.

Don’t skip the Disney Gallery! The Opera House also features exhibits with historic photographs, artwork, artifacts and memorabilia celebrating Disneyland’s history. It’s a fascinating place to explore, especially if you appreciate the stories behind the park’s creation.

Best of all, the entire experience is indoors. Between exploring the gallery and catching a presentation, you can easily spend 30 minutes or more here while waiting for the rain to pass.

3. Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway

One of the best indoor rides at Disneyland is Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway, located in Mickey’s Toontown. It is the perfect place to go when you’re at Disneyland in the rain!

Opened in 2023, this family-friendly attraction takes you into the colorful world of a Mickey Mouse cartoon, where a peaceful train ride quickly turns into a wild adventure.

What makes this attraction especially appealing on rainy days is its elaborate indoor queue. Before boarding, you’ll walk through the El CapiTOON Theater, which features a collection of Mickey Mouse movie props, costumes and memorabilia.

It’s one of the few attractions where waiting in line is part of the fun! Just keep in mind that the outdoor approach and portions of the entry area are exposed to the weather.

4. More Indoor Rides at Disneyland

In addition to Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway, there are plenty of other indoor rides at the Disneyland Resort where you can stay dry.

Haunted Mansion on a drizzly day.

Some of the best options include:

  • Pirates of the Caribbean: A lengthy indoor boat ride through pirate-filled scenes in New Orleans Square.
  • Haunted Mansion: Explore a spooky mansion filled with ghosts and supernatural surprises.
  • Space Mountain: A thrilling indoor roller coaster through outer space.
  • Star Tours – The Adventures Continue: A 3D motion simulator adventure through the Star Wars galaxy.
  • Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters: An interactive shooting-gallery attraction where you help Buzz defeat Emperor Zurg.
  • Indiana Jones Adventure: A thrilling expedition through a mysterious temple.

And while it’s a small world is another lengthy indoor boat ride, its outdoor loading area makes it a less ideal choice during a heavy downpour.

All of these rides take place primarily indoors, but it’s important to know that a portion of the line will be outdoors and not protected from the rain.

5. Indoor Rides at Disney California Adventure

Disney California Adventure also has several excellent indoor attractions that are perfect for rainy days.

  • Soarin’ Across America: Take a simulated hang-gliding journey over spectacular landmarks around the U.S.A.
  • WEB SLINGERS: A Spider-Man Adventure: Join Spider-Man in an interactive adventure at Avengers Campus.
  • Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue!: Follow Mike and Sulley through Monstropolis as they try to return Boo to her bedroom.
  • The Little Mermaid – Ariel’s Undersea Adventure: Travel through scenes from the animated movie on a gentle, family-friendly ride.
  • Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT!: Experience an exciting indoor drop ride featuring characters from the Marvel movies.

6. Animation Building at DCA

Located in the DCA’s Hollywood Land area, the Disney Animation Building is a great place to take cover from the rain.

It’s huge inside, and there is a lot to do, including Turtle Talk with Crush, Sorcerer’s Workshop, or just watching how animated features are made in the Animation Courtyard.

One of the Animation Building’s biggest attractions is Animation Academy, which gives you step-by-step instruction on how to illustrate some of your favorite Disney characters under the guidance of a Disney artist. Learn some basic tricks and techniques of animation, and when it’s all over you can take home your work as a souvenir!

7. Escape the Rain by Catching a Show

Another great way to escape the rain at Disneyland is to catch an indoor show. Both Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure offer theater experiences that give you a chance to sit down, relax and stay dry.

At Disney California Adventure, Mickey’s PhilharMagic is a fun option for the whole family. Located in Hollywood Land, this 3D theater attraction features Donald Duck and some of Disney’s most beloved animated characters in a musical adventure.

Families with younger children should also check the schedule for Disney Jr. Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Live!, an interactive stage show featuring Mickey, Minnie and their friends. Performances are offered seasonally, so check availability before your visit.

Another favorite is Turtle Talk with Crush, located inside the Disney Animation Building. During this interactive show, kids can ask questions and chat with Crush, the laid-back sea turtle from Finding Nemo. It’s always entertaining because every performance is a little different!

8. Ride the Mark Twain Riverboat

If the rain is light, consider taking a leisurely cruise aboard the Mark Twain Riverboat at Disneyland Park.

This beautiful 19th-century-style paddle-wheel riverboat takes guests on a scenic journey around the Rivers of America in Frontierland, passing Tom Sawyer Island and other sights along the waterfront.

The boat has three levels, including covered areas where you can enjoy the views while staying sheltered from light showers.

The approximately 14-minute cruise is a relaxing way to take a break from the busier attractions, and it’s especially enjoyable if you appreciate Disneyland’s nostalgic charm.

However, I wouldn’t recommend the Mark Twain Riverboat during a heavy downpour. Boarding takes place outdoors, and wind can blow rain into the covered areas. The attraction may also temporarily close during unfavorable weather conditions.

Save this one for lighter showers or when the skies begin to clear.

9. Do a Little Shopping

If ever there were a good excuse to do a little Disney shopping, a rainy day is it!

Both Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure have plenty of indoor shops where you can browse souvenirs, clothing, collectibles and other Disney merchandise while staying warm and dry.

Holiday display at the World of Disney store in Downtown Disney.

At Disneyland Park, I especially recommend exploring the shops along Main Street, U.S.A. Many are connected, making it easy to browse several stores without having to go back outside.

The Emporium is one of the largest shops at Disneyland and a great place to find everything from Mickey ears and spirit jerseys to toys and home decor.

At Disney California Adventure, the shops along Buena Vista Street are another good option. Elias & Co. is particularly fun to explore, with its vintage department store atmosphere and extensive selection of Disney merchandise. Inside the shops, you can also find caramel apples and plenty of other delicious snacks at Disney California Adventure.

If you’re willing to leave the parks for a while, World of Disney in Downtown Disney is another excellent choice. This enormous store carries a huge selection of Disneyland Resort merchandise and is a fun place to spend time when the weather isn’t cooperating.

10. Slip into Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel

One of my favorite places to take a break from the parks is Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa.

A cozy spot in the Grand Californian Lobby.

Located adjacent to Disney California Adventure Park, this beautiful Craftsman-style hotel has an enormous lobby with comfortable seating, warm wood interiors and a massive stone fireplace. I think it’s the perfect place to stay dry and regroup in an elegant setting.

You don’t have to be staying at the hotel to visit its lobby. The Grand Californian also has dining options, including Hearthstone Lounge and Storytellers Cafe, if you’d prefer to enjoy a meal or drink while waiting for the rain to stop.

A beautiful Christmas Tree is the centerpiece of the hotel during the holiday season.

If you are visiting Disneyland at Christmas, there is a beautiful tree and elaborate gingerbread display in the hotel lobby you won’t want to miss regardless of the weather.

11. Enjoy a Meal Indoors

When all else fails, plenty of restaurants throughout the parks have indoor seating where you can enjoy a leisurely meal or great Disneyland snacks while waiting out the rain.

At Disney California Adventure Park, Flo’s V8 Cafe in Cars Land has a good sized dining room. Smokejumpers Grill, located next to Soarin’ Across America, also has plenty of indoor seating.

Inside Flo’s V8 Cafe.

At Disneyland, great indoor restaurants include the Golden Horseshoe, Alien Pizza Planet, Red Rose Tavern and Plaza Inn for nice indoor seating. Keep in mind though, these spaces may fill up fast in heavy rain.

Travel Insight

Alien Pizza Planet is one of the only quick-service restaurants at Disneyland that offers free refills on your drink, so it is a great spot to sit and kill time if you need to take a break from the rain.

One thing to remember is that indoor tables become especially popular when it rains, so finding a seat may take longer than usual.

For a more leisurely break, consider a table-service restaurant such as Lamplight Lounge at Pixar Pier, Goofy’s Kitchen at the Disneyland Hotel, or Storytellers Cafe at Disney’s Grand Californian.

Enjoy the buffet or table service meal at Storytellers Cafe.

Reservations are usually recommended, but if the crowds are light you might get lucky and find a table without one! These are also some of the great spots to enjoy an adult beverage at Disneyland.

Tips for Visiting Disneyland in the Rain

A little planning can make a big difference when you’re visiting Disneyland on a rainy day. Here are a few things I’ve learned from years of visiting the parks.

Check the Disneyland App for Ride Closures

Most attractions at Disneyland and Disney California Adventure continue operating in light rain, but some outdoor rides may temporarily close when conditions become unsafe.

Rides such as Alice in Wonderland, Storybook Land Canal Boats, Goofy’s Sky School and Luigi’s Rollickin’ Roadsters are among those that can be affected by wet weather.

Use the Disneyland app to monitor attraction availability and wait times throughout the day. If an outdoor ride closes temporarily, consider visiting a nearby indoor attraction instead.

Take Advantage of Shorter Lines

One of the advantages of visiting Disneyland in the rain is that crowds are typically way lighter. However, don’t assume that a rainy forecast guarantees an empty park! Weekends, holidays and special events can still attract large crowds.

My advice is to take advantage of shorter waits when you see them, but keep a few indoor attractions in mind in case the rain becomes heavier.

Plan Around the Weather

If the forecast calls for intermittent showers, consider visiting outdoor attractions during breaks in the rain and saving indoor rides, shows and restaurants for wetter periods.

This approach gives you more flexibility and can help you avoid spending the entire day waiting in outdoor queues during heavy showers.

Consider Taking a Hotel Break

If you’re staying at one of the hotels walking distance to Disneyland, a rainy afternoon might be the perfect time to head back to your room, change into dry clothes and relax.

This is especially helpful for families with younger children who may get cold or uncomfortable after several hours in wet weather.

What to Pack for Disneyland in the Rain

You don’t need a lot of extra gear to enjoy a rainy day at Disneyland, but a few essentials can make your visit much more comfortable. (No affiliate links here! I just genuinely want to help make sure you are prepared.)

  • Waterproof jacket or poncho – A lightweight rain jacket is ideal because it keeps your hands free for rides, snacks and photos.
  • Comfortable, water-resistant shoes – Wet socks and shoes can make a long park day miserable.
  • Extra socks – Pack a dry pair in your backpack, especially if rain is expected throughout the day.
  • Compact umbrella – Helpful during heavy showers, although less convenient in crowded walkways. (And you definitely don’t want to be that annoying person hitting others with your umbrella.)
  • Waterproof pouch – Protect your phone, portable charger and other electronics.
  • Plastic or waterproof bag – Useful for storing wet ponchos or clothing without soaking everything else in your backpack.

One Final Tip: Even when rain is in the forecast, remember that Southern California weather can change quickly. Dressing in layers will help you stay comfortable if the sun comes out later in the day.
