Designed specifically for families with children ages 2 through 12, LEGOLAND combines rides, interactive attractions, live shows, and hands-on LEGO building experiences. The park features more than 60 rides, shows, and attractions, making it easy to spend an entire day (or more) exploring.
When my son was younger we visited often. The park’s emphasis on creativity and learning through play makes it an ideal destination for families with younger kids.
LEGOLAND California’s newest themed area – Galaxy Land – made its debut in March 2026, bringing out-of-this-world fun to kids and adults alike. With a brand-new roller coaster, junior astronaut play zones, and interactive space-themed attractions, this expansion adds a major reason to visit.
LEGOLAND also has a water park which is open seasonally. The thing to know about the water park is that it is only accessible through LEGOLAND. Therefore, you cannot buy admission to just the water park; you must purchase a combined ticket to access both areas.
For families with younger children, LEGOLAND remains one of the best theme park experiences in Southern California.

2. SEA LIFE Aquarium

The area tends to come alive in the afternoon and early evenings on the weekends during happy hour, but it never feels overly crowded. It’s also one of the most walkable areas in North County San Diego, so it’s easy to park once and spend a few hours exploring or relaxing on the beach.
4. South Carlsbad State Beach
For a classic Southern California beach day, head to South Carlsbad State Beach. It is widely regarded as one of the best beaches in San Diego!
Often referred to as Ponto Beach by locals, this beautiful stretch of coastline offers wide sandy beaches, scenic ocean views, and a more relaxed atmosphere than some of the area’s busier beaches. We visited Carlsbad State Beach when we stayed at the Cassara Carlsbad, located just a few minutes away from the beach.
There are multiple access points via staircases and ramps, and a scenic walking path runs along the bluffs above. At low tide, kids can explore tide pools and spot marine life like crabs, anemones, and small fish.
Top Tip: Check tide charts online and time your visit to the shore for the best tide pooling experience.
The campground atop the coastal bluffs in Carlsbad is also one of the most popular beach camping destinations in Southern California, with more than 200 individual campsites, including water and electricity hookups for campers.
Reservations tend to go quickly (and months in advance for peak times), so plan accordingly if beach camping is on your agenda.
5. Carlsbad Flower Fields
If you are visiting San Diego in spring, one of the most breathtaking sights you won’t want to miss is the blooming of The Carlsbad Flower Fields.
Open seasonally from early March through early May, this iconic attraction features nearly 50 acres of vibrant ranunculus flowers blooming across rolling hills overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The colorful displays create one of Southern California’s most photographed springtime landscapes.

The first time I visited the Green Dragon Tavern & Museum, I got serious east coast vibes. I grew up in New York and spent a lot of time exploring cities like Boston and Philadelphia; Green Dragon Tavern & Museum definitely feels out of place in Southern California, but in the coolest possible way!
The museum is free to visit and can be explored in less than an hour (it is just one big room), making it an easy stop between other fun Carlsbad activities. You don’t need to purchase anything at the restaurant to go inside.
