15 Best Beaches in San Diego for Families
Last updated on September 5, 2026

San Diego County is home to some of the most beautiful and family-friendly beaches in California. I have lived in the area for more than 20 years and raised my son here, and I feel so lucky to live so close to the beaches people travel so far to visit on vacation.
With 70 miles of coastline stretching from Coronado to Oceanside, beaches in San Diego County are truly world-class. Youโll find everything from wide sandy shores to rocky tide pools, many with piers and lively boardwalks.
Whether youโre visiting San Diego with toddlers, teens, or somewhere in between, thereโs a perfect beach for your family!
Based on my experience as a local, I’ve rounded up the top 15 kid-friendly beaches to help you plan your visit, and provided insight on each one, lots of photos, and tips for parking and more.

Many travel guides list the best beaches in San Diego from north to south. However I am going to flip that around and list them from south to north. If you are visiting San Diego, your starting point will most likely be in or around the downtown area, so this order will be most helpful!
I’ve also included a map below to help you visualize where these best beaches in San Diego for families are along the coast.
Best Family-Friendly Beaches in San Diego
Here are the 15 best beaches in San Diego County for a fun day on the shore.
1. Coronado Beach

I am starting with Coronado Beach because it is my personal favorite! Coronado is one of the most iconic beaches in Southern California. The shoreline is exceptionally wide and flat, giving kids plenty of space to run, play, and build sandcastles.
โบ Travel Insight
The sand in Coronado sparkles thanks to mica minerals, which adds a fun, almost magical touch to the beach.
The waves in Coronado are typically gentle, making it a safer for swimming and wading compared to some other beaches.
Coronado Beach is located near the historic Hotel del Coronado. While youโre there, take some time to wander around town, visit the free Coronado Museum (it is located in the original ice house, which is pretty cool!), and check out some of the other fun things to do in Coronado Island with kids.
One thing I need to note about Coronado Island is that parking can be pricey and hard to find โ so come early if you are visiting on a busy weekend or during summer in San Diego. I am usually able to find free street parking if I get there before 9 a.m.
- Best For: Families looking for a wide, clean beach in iconic Coronado Island
- Parking: Street parking and public lots along Orange Avenue and Ocean Blvd.
- Ocean Blvd, Coronado
2. Silver Strand State Beach

Silver Strand State Beach offers a quieter alternative to some of the more crowded beaches in San Diego. Located along a narrow strip of land between the Pacific Ocean and San Diego Bay, itโs known for its peaceful atmosphere and natural beauty.
You can reach it either by going over the Coronado Bay Bridge or driving down the coast and then up the peninsula. I find it less crowded than the beaches in Coronado.
We recently stayed at Loews Coronado Bay Resort, which is located right by Silver Strand State Beach and even has a private walking path to the sand. We spent a lot of time on this beach and it truly is a gem of a destination.
- Best For: Families wanting an open beach in a quieter, less crowded area
- Parking: Paid state beach parking lot (day-use fee required)
- 5000 CA-75, Coronado
3. Mission Beach

If you are looking for the best beaches in San Diego for families, Mission Beach needs to be high on your list!
Mission Beach is one of the liveliest beach destinations in the county. The wide sandy beach is paired with a bustling boardwalk that stretches for miles, perfect for biking, rollerblading, or walking. There are plenty of spots along the boardwalk to rent gear or grab a bite.
Mission Beach is also home to Belmont Park, a beachfront amusement park featuring a historic wooden roller coaster and lots of other rides and attractions. In fact, Belmont Park is one of the most popular amusement parks in Southern California.

Belmont Park is totally free to enter. You can walk around and enjoy the vibes and free entertainment. You only have to pay if you want to go on rides, play arcade games, laser tag, mini golf, or grab a bite to eat. In fact, one of the things we love to do is buy pizza slices in Belmont Park and bring them down to the beach.

- Best For: Families who want a lively beach atmosphere and easy access to Belmont Park
- Parking: Street parking and free public lots adjacent to Belmont Park
- 3190 Mission Blvd, San Diego
4. Mission Bay Park

Mission Bay Park is a bit of a departure on this list of best beaches in San Diego for families, because it is the only one not on the Pacific Ocean. Instead, Mission Bay Park stretches along the shores of Mission Bay in San Diego.
As the largest man-made aquatic park in the country, Mission Bay Park offers calm, bay-side beaches with little to no waves โ ideal for safe splashing, swimming, and paddleboarding. It is a great beach for families with younger kids.
The park features multiple beach areas, grassy picnic spots, playgrounds, and miles of walking and biking paths. Popular family-friendly areas within Mission Bay include Sail Bay and Crown Point, both known for their gentle water and relaxed atmosphere.
Because the water is calmer than the open ocean, itโs a great place for little kids or families who prefer a more low-key beach day. There are also plenty of spots for kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and even renting bikes or surreys.
โบ There are a number of awesome hotels on Mission Bay in San Diego, all with private beaches right on the bay and their own bike and watersports rentals. If you are planning to spend time on Mission Bay, be sure to check them out!
With ample parking, restrooms, and open space, Mission Bay Park is one of the easiest and most convenient places in San Diego to spend a full day outdoors with kids. I have found that even though it can get busy in the summer and on warm weekends throughout the year, parking is almost always easier to find than at the ocean beaches.
- Best For: Families who want to enjoy a full day of picnics, biking, paddleboarding, or just enjoying the very calm water
- Parking: Free and paid lots throughout Mission Bay
- 2688 E Mission Bay Drive, San Diego
5. La Jolla Shores

La Jolla Shores is widely considered one of the best beaches in San Diego for families with young kids. The beach is long and gently sloping, with some of the calmest surf in the area.
Guided kayak tours are offered from around La Jolla Shores for an up-close and personal experience with marine life and a view of the caves and rugged coastline. My husband and son tried this tour and absolutely loved it!
This beach is also a hub for water activities like snorkeling. The adjacent marine protected area offers opportunities to see marine life like garibaldi fish, leopard sharks (harmless), and even rays.
- Best For: Families with kids of all ages who want a fun beach day
- Parking: Mainly street parking that fills up fast
- 8200 Camino del Oro, La Jolla
6. La Jolla Cove

La Jolla Cove is one of the most picturesque coastal spots in San Diego and a must-visit for families. While itโs smaller than some of the wider sandy beaches in the area, the calm, protected waters make it ideal for snorkeling and exploring.
One of the biggest highlights here is the chance to see marine life up close. Sea lions and seals are frequently spotted lounging on nearby rocks or swimming in the cove. You’ll see crowds gathered to watch them sunbathe and swim.

Because the beach area itself is small and can get crowded, itโs often better suited for shorter visits or snorkeling rather than a full sandcastle-and-umbrella kind of day. You may want to pair a visit here with a stop in La Jolla Village for shopping or a meal.
- Best For: Scenic walks, snorkeling and marine life exploration, and taking photos
- Parking: Limited street parking and paid lots
- 1100 Coast Blvd, La Jolla
7. Windansea Beach

Windansea Beach is one of the most scenic beaches in San Diego! While itโs more of a scenic beach than a swimming one due to its stronger surf, itโs perfect playing in the sand and watching waves.
The really cool thing about Windansea Beach and what makes it special is its iconic surf shack, a historic, palm-thatched shelter built by locals in the 1940s.
Windansea Beach is also typically less crowded than nearby La Jolla Cove, offering a more peaceful experience. However, weโve found that parking can be tough in this neighborhood, so best to visit early or on less crowded weekdays.
- Best For: Scenic walks, snorkeling and marine life exploration, and taking photos
- Parking: Free residential street parking (very limited)
- 6800 Neptune Place, La Jolla
8. Torrey Pines State Beach

Torrey Pines State Beach offers one of the most scenic beach experiences in all of San Diego, making it a great choice for families who want to combine beach time with a bit of outdoor adventure. Backed by dramatic cliffs and located just below Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve, this beach feels more natural and less developed than many others in the area.
The wide shoreline is ideal for walking, beachcombing, and relaxing, especially during low tide when the beach really opens up. While the waves can be a bit stronger here than at more sheltered beaches, itโs still a great place for older kids to splash around under supervision.
One of the biggest draws is the ability to pair your beach visit with a hike. Trails above in the reserve offer incredible ocean views and a chance to see the rare Torrey pine trees. Itโs a great option if you want to mix in some active exploration with your beach day.
- Best For: A fun beach day paired with hikes at Torrey Pines Reserve
- Parking: Paid state beach lots (fills quickly on weekends)
- 12600 N Torrey Pines Road, La Jolla
9. Del Mar City Beach

Del Mar City Beach offers a wide, sandy shoreline perfect for families, stunning cliffside vistas, and plenty of space for beach games. The beach is also close to Del Mar Village with its great shops and restaurants, and many other fun things to do in Del Mar.
One of the great things about going to Del Mar with kids is Powerhouse Park. Located right at the beach, it has a playground, grassy lawn, picnic tables, and restrooms. We always see tons of kids playing when we are there.
The beach is also within walking distance of Del Mar Village, where youโll find shops and restaurants.
- Best For: Families with kids of all ages who want to combine beach time with visiting Del Mar Village
- Parking: Metered street parking and paid lots (limited availability)
- 1700 Coast Blvd, Del Mar
10. Fletcher Cove Beach Park
Fletcher Cove Beach Park is a smaller, easy-to-access beach thatโs perfect for families with younger children or those looking for a less crowded option. A gradual ramp leads down to the sand, making it stroller-friendly.
At low tide, the beach opens up for long walks and exploring. The park above includes a playground, picnic tables, and open space for kids to run around. Itโs also a great spot for spotting dolphins or even migrating whales during certain seasons.
- Best For: Families with younger kids
- Parking: Small free lot and nearby residential street parking
- 111 S Sierra Ave, Solana Beach
11. Moonlight Beach

Encinitas can be a bit of a hidden gem in San Diego if you are not from the area, but it has some of the best beaches in San Diego!
Moonlight State Beach is one of the most well-equipped beaches in San Diego County. It offers a large sandy area, gentle surf, and excellent facilities including restrooms, outdoor showers, volleyball courts, and fire pits.
One of its standout features is the playground located directly on the sand โ perfect for younger kids who may need a break from the water. Thereโs also a snack bar and plenty of picnic tables.
- Best For: Families with kids of all ages, especially young children
- Parking: Small paid lot and limited street parking
- 400 B Street, Encinitas
12. Swamiโs State Beach
Also located in Encinitas, Swamiโs State Beach is known to locals as a surf spot, but it is also great for families. The stairs down to the beach lead to a scenic stretch of sand and reef areas where tide pooling is popular.
Above the beach, a small park provides benches and grassy areas with beautiful ocean views. Itโs a great place to relax even if you donโt plan to spend the whole day on the sand.
- Best For: Surf watching, tide pooling at low tide, and scenic coastal views
- Parking: Small paid lot and limited street parking
- 1298 S Coast Hwy 101, Encinitas
13. Carlsbad State Beach

Spending time at the beach is one of the best things to do in Carlsbad, and Carlsbad State Beach is a favorite for families.
The beach stretches for miles and features a mix of sandy areas and rocky sections, especially during lower tides. It’s a nice spot to enjoy a classic beach day of playing in the water and in the sand! It is also a popular spot for surfing, though South Carlsbad State Beach (also known as Ponto Beach) has more well-defined peaks for surfing than the main stretch.
There are multiple access points via staircases and ramps, and a scenic walking path runs along the bluffs above. At low tide, you can explore tide pools and spot marine life like crabs, anemones, and small fish.

We visited Carlsbad State Beach when we stayed at the Cassara Carlsbad, located just a few minutes away from the beach. You can check online to see when low tide will be time your visit to the shore for the best tide pooling experience. There was lots of marine life to see and some great photo ops along the rocky coast, too! The nearby Carlsbad Village is a great place to grab a bite after your beach day.
- Best For: Families with kids of all ages, especially young children
- Parking: Small paid lot and limited street parking
- 3200 Ocean Street, Carlsbad
14. Tamarack Beach

Tamarack Beach is one of the most accessible and family-friendly beaches in Carlsbad. It is located between Tamarack Avenue and Frazee Beach, near Lifeguard Tower 36. Tamarack is part of Carlsbad State Beach and is very popular with families.
What makes Tamarack stand out for families is the convenient parking lot right by the sand (a rarity in San Diego), along with restrooms and outdoor showers. The beach itself is wide and sandy, with a mix of waves that can appeal to both casual swimmers and surfers.
Above the beach, a paved boardwalk runs along the seawall, making it ideal for strollers, bikes, or scooters. Its proximity to Carlsbad Village means youโre just minutes away from lots of restaurants, coffee shops, and casual dining options.

I recommend you walk up a few blocks to Handel’s, a classic ice cream stand in Carlsbad Village. It is always packed which means the ice cream is great!
- Best For: Families with kids of all ages who want easy access to beach amenities and tide pooling
- Parking: Paid parking lot and limited free street parking
- Tamarack Avenue, Carlsbad
15. Oceanside Beach

Centered around the Oceanside Pier, this beach offers a classic Southern California experience. The long wooden pier is perfect for a family stroll, fishing, or simply taking in ocean views. Kids will enjoy watching surfers below or grabbing a treat nearby.
The Strand, a paved path along the beach, is ideal for biking, walking, or scootering. Oceanside also has fire pits available, making it a great place to end the day with a beach bonfire and sโmores. The area has seen a major revitalization in recent years, with new restaurants and shops nearby.
- Best For: Families who want a classic beach, pier, and boardwalk experience
- Parking: Paid parking lot and limited free street parking
- Pier View Way & The Strand, Oceanside
