It’s a very popular question, so I’ve done the research for you and put together this quick guide to help you determine when and where to go.
San Diego is one of the top destinations in the world for whale watching, thanks to the city’s location along key migratory routes in the Pacific Ocean. If you’re planning a trip and wondering when to go for your best shot at catching a glimpse of the whales, here’s what you need to know.

Here’s a breakdown of what you can expect to see throughout the different times of year.
Winter to Early Spring (Mid-December through April)
If you are visiting San Diego in winter, this is considered the prime whale watching season in San Diego. During these months, more than 20,000 gray whales migrate from Alaska to Baja California to give birth in the warmer waters of Mexico. They pass close to the San Diego coast, making sightings both frequent and predictable.

- Why it’s great: Calm seas and reliable sightings make whale watching this time of year especially family-friendly.
Summer to Early Fall (June through September)
If you are planning to visit San Diego during the warmer months, you can still see whales!
The summer season brings a different opportunity – the blue whale, the largest animal on Earth. San Diego is one of the few places where you can see these majestic creatures, along with fin whales, humpbacks, and minke whales.
- What you’ll see: Blue whales, fin whales, humpbacks, and dolphins.
- Why it’s great: Warmer weather and calmer waters make for a more pleasant experience.
Shoulder Seasons (May and October)
While late spring and fall aren’t peak times, they can still offer good chances to see whales, particularly humpbacks. You can also see dolphins off the coast during these times, along with other marine life. We recently took a harbor cruise through San Diego Bay and saw tons of sea lions sunning themselves, which was really fun and something kids love.
- What you’ll see: Occasional humpbacks, dolphins, and sea lions.
- Why it’s great: Smaller crowds and often lower ticket prices.
How to See Whales in San Diego
There are basically two ways your family can enjoy whale watching in San Diego – from land or on a whale watching tour at sea.
I definitely recommend booking a tour and getting out on the water, but of course that’s not always an option for everyone. There are a few spots on land where people have had luck viewing gray whales from the shore. Torrey Pines State Reserve, Birch Aquarium, La Jolla, and Cabrillo National Monument in Point Loma are all good spots because they are up high and offer expansive views of the ocean below.
For a closer look at the migrating whales – and honestly your best shot of seeing them at all – there are many whale watching tours in San Diego you can hop aboard. Whale watching tours depart from a couple different locations and typically last around three hours. There are always tour guides or marine naturalists on board to narrate what’s going on and answer questions.
In addition to whales, you’ll likely see dolphins, sea lions, and lots of sea birds. (To be honest dolphins are a lot more fun to watch than the whales, but the whales are bigger and more majestic.) This is an activity I whole-heartedly recommend for your entire family, especially if you are visiting during peak whale watching season in San Diego. So when is the best time for whale watching in San Diego?
The most popular time of year and when you’ll see the most whales in the water is definitely during the winter season. That is when most boat companies run their whale watching tours. And if I had to pick one top San Diego whale watching season, this would be it!
But really, it depends on what kind of whales you’d like to see. Visit in winter and early spring for gray whales, or in summer and early fall for blue whales. Either way, San Diego offers unforgettable opportunities to witness these incredible animals in their natural habitat.
