Last updated on November 1, 2026

Wondering if San Diego is a good place to visit in the springtime?
San Diego, California is a fantastic destination year-round, but spring offers a particularly special experience. With its near-perfect weather, low crowds, and an array of fun seasonal events, visiting this time of year allows you to enjoy the city’s best attractions without the peak summer rush.
As a long time resident of the area, I am excited to share why spring is a great time to visit San Diego.
Spring in San Diego
Here are ten reasons why spring – whether you visit during spring break or any time in March, April, or May – is the perfect time to travel to America’s finest city.
1. Perfect Spring Weather

Spring in San Diego means mild temperatures, plenty of sunshine, and a comfortable coastal breeze. Daytime highs range from the mid 60s to low 70s, making it ideal for exploring the city’s beaches, hiking trails, and outdoor attractions.
Plus, there’s less chance of rain compared to winter in San Diego, ensuring clear skies for sightseeing.
2. The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch

One of the most breathtaking sights in spring is the blooming of The Flower Fields in Carlsbad.
The Flower Fields are a seasonal wonder, open to the public for just two months each year, from early March through early May.
During this time, you can stroll through nearly 50 acres of fields filled with a stunning array of ranunculus flowers ranging from soft pastels to bright, bold hues.

You can explore the fields, take guided wagon tours, and capture incredible photos of this seasonal wonder. There are lots of activities for kids, too!
For the 2026 season, the Flower Fields will be open every day between March 1 and May 10, but the best time to visit the Carlsbad Flower Fields is the month of April. For the most up-to-date information on blooming status of the different fields (aka how many acres of ranunculus are in bloom), check the official Carlsbad Flower Fields website and click the “Bloom Status” button for current conditions.
3. Whale Watching Season

Spring marks the tail end of whale watching season in San Diego for the gray whale migration. This is your final chance to see these majestic creatures as they travel back north.
Whale-watching tours depart from San Diego’s harbor, providing an unforgettable opportunity to witness whales, dolphins, and other marine life in their natural habitat.
4. Fewer Crowds at Popular Attractions

Spring is a shoulder season in San Diego, meaning there are fewer tourists at the many family-friendly San Diego attractions compared to summer. This translates to shorter lines at major attractions like the San Diego Zoo, Balboa Park, SeaWorld, and LEGOLAND, and fewer crowds overall just about everywhere you go.
You’ll have more space to explore and enjoy a more relaxed experience without tons of people everywhere you go.

Even off-season, weekends at area theme parks can get very busy. For the best shot at avoiding crowds, plan to visit during the week.
5. More Affordable Hotel Rates

Even during spring break in San Diego, hotel prices are generally lower compared to summer months. You can find great deals on accommodations, from oceanfront resorts to inexpensive hotels in the suburbs.
By visiting San Diego in the spring season, you can take advantage of these savings while still enjoying everything the city has to offer. Plan a weekday visit instead of a weekend, and chances are you will save even more!
6. Springtime at SeaWorld San Diego

Spring is a great time to visit SeaWorld San Diego, as the park often debuts new attractions and seasonal events.
This spring, SeaWorld welcomes an all-new Shark Encounter exhibit. This experience features sharks alongside a vibrant array of marine life, as the expanded exhibit transforms into a dynamic underwater adventure. There will also be a VIP Shark Tour available.
The park will also hold the second annual Fins and Flippers 5k running and walking event for families and children, taking place on April 19, 2026. You can run or walk a 3.1-mile course through the park and along Mission Bay. Costumes are encouraged, so you and your family can get creative and dress up in your best fins, flippers, or ocean-inspired attire for a fun day.
One of our favorite events at SeaWorld San Diego in spring is the Seven Seas Food Festival, which this year runs from March 7 to April 27. This fun event gives you the chance to sample food and drinks from around the world, plus craft beers and wines for the grown-ups, and live musical performances every weekend.
Special events aside, SeaWorld San Diego in spring offers fewer crowds, so you can experience rides with shorter lines, get up close to marine animals, and watch the shows without having to get there super early to find a seat.
7. Catch a Ball Game

The Major League Baseball season starts in late March, so if you’re visiting San Diego in spring plan to catch a Padres game at Petco Park.
Even if you are not a diehard baseball fan, the stadium is amazing and attending a game is a really cool experience. Petco Park has one of the best San Diego views skyline views as the backdrop to the outfield. The stadium also has fireworks shows on select nights.
If you aren’t up for a game or the timing doesn’t work out, you can still take a behind-the-scenes at Petco Park tour. The ballpark is conveniently located right in downtown San Diego near the Gaslamp District.
8. Ideal Conditions for Hiking and Outdoor Activities

With comfortable temperatures and lush greenery from winter rains, spring is perfect for exploring San Diego’s outdoor spaces. Popular hiking spots like Torrey Pines State Reserve, Cowles Mountain, and Cabrillo National Monument offer stunning ocean views and scenic trails.

9. Beautiful Beach Days (Without the Summer Crowds)

We’ve talked about crowds a few times, but in this case, it is worth mentioning again!
San Diego’s beaches are beautiful year-round, but in the spring, you can enjoy them without the overwhelming summer crowds.
The wonderful thing about San Diego is the variety of beaches. For instance, in spots like Mission Beach and Oceanside, you’ll find endless stretches of smooth sand and an energetic boardwalk scene, while La Jolla is known for its gorgeous cliffs and tide pools. Coronado Beach has the iconic Hotel del Coronado as a backdrop.

One of our favorite beaches is in Del Mar. In addition to being a scenic and lovely beach, it is located close to Del Mar Village with all its great restaurants, as well as Torrey Pines State Park.
Whether you prefer surfing at Pacific Beach, sunbathing in La Jolla, or strolling along Coronado Beach, you’ll find plenty of space to relax and soak up the sun.
10. Seasonal Food and Drinks

Spring brings fresh, locally sourced ingredients to San Diego’s vibrant food scene. Many restaurants and farmers’ markets feature seasonal delights like strawberries, avocados, and fresh seafood.
If you like Mexican food, there is a wonderful event in Old Town San Diego to celebrate Cinco de Mayo, and the Sicilian Festival in Little Italy (with entertainment and Italian food!) also happens in May.
The perfect San Diego springtime weather also makes it an ideal time to dine outdoors. Some of the best places to go for a meal and sit outside is the Gaslamp Quarter. You’ll also find a ton of great restaurants along the waterfront at Seaport Village San Diego and along the Embarcadero.
