

San Diego may be known for its “May Gray,” but don’t let a little gloomy weather in the forecast keep you away! It is still one of the most beautiful months of the year to visit.
May in San Diego feels like early summer – longer days, blooming flowers, warming temperatures, and a calendar packed with festivals and outdoor events.
It’s also that sweet spot before peak summer tourism hits, which means there will only be light crowds at the area’s top attractions.

1. Explore Balboa Park in Full Bloom

Balboa Park is stunning in May. Gardens are lush, flowers are blooming, and temperatures are ideal for strolling between museums and outdoor spaces.

- Inez Grant Parker Memorial Rose Garden
The Inez Grant Parker Memorial Rose Garden can be easy to miss since if you don’t know it’s there since you need to cross Park Blvd. to see it. Use the pedestrian bridge adjacent to the San Diego Natural History Museum. Home to a stunning display of approximately 1,600 roses, including more than 130 varieties, the rose garden reaches peak bloom in May and June, so this is the perfect time to visit!

May is also a great time to explore the park’s museums before summer crowds increase. Some of our favorite family-friendly museums in Balboa Park include the San Diego Natural History Museum, Fleet Science Center, and Model Railroad Museum. The San Diego History Museum is small but has some great exhibits, and it’s free enter for everyone year-round!
The Balboa Park International Cottages, where you can experience the culture and authentic tastes of nearly three dozen countries from around the globe, is also a fun spot to explore, as is the totally free Botanical Building.
2. Visit the Beaches Before Summer Crowds Arrive

May is one of the best times of year to enjoy San Diego’s beaches without peak summer crowds. Even though the water is chilly, the air is warm and afternoons are usually sunny.
One of the wonderful things I love about San Diego is its variety of beaches. For instance, in spots like Mission Beach and Oceanside, you’ll find endless stretches of smooth sand and an energetic boardwalk scene, while La Jolla is known for its gorgeous cliffs and tide pools.
Many beaches in San Diego also have piers you can walk out onto and grab an ice cream, go fishing, or just enjoy the views. During May in San Diego, you will also find most beaches staffed with lifeguards, and all have restroom facilities.
Here are a few of our favorite beaches.
- Mission Beach features a lively boardwalk, bike rentals, and easy access to Belmont Park.
- La Jolla Shores is ideal for families thanks to its wide sandy beach and gentle waves.

- Silver Strand State Beach is located just south of Coronado and typically offers a more sedate beach experience.

4. Celebrate at Gator by the Bay

Held each year over Mother’s Day weekend, Gator by the Bay is a New Orleans-inspired festival featuring live music, Cajun and Creole food, and family-friendly activities. This year it will take place May 7-10, 2026 at Spanish Landing Park (on the water near the airport).
Gator by the Bay is one of San Diego’s most unique spring events. Enjoy four days of nonstop music, dancing, kids’ activities, and food, with authentic Creole & Cajun fare including 10,000 pounds of crawfish flown straight from the bayous.
5. Celebrate Cinco de Mayo in Old Town San Diego

Old Town is one of my favorite spots in San Diego. It’s the kind of place I always bring friends and family when they are visiting from out of town. May is a great time to visit!
Known as the birthplace of California, Old Town State Historic Park is the site of the first Spanish settlement in California, founded in in 1769. Today, it is a lively attraction with 50 shops and restaurants, including many incredible Mexican restaurants.

Plan to visit between May 1 and May 5 to check out Old Town’s Cinco de Mayo Celebration. There will be a fiesta at the park filled with entertainment for the whole family, including Mariachi music and dancing, tequila samples, a beer garden, and multiple food options.
6. Take a Harbor Cruise

May is a great time of year to take a scenic harbor cruise on San Diego Bay. Set sail from the Embarcadero in downtown San Diego for views of the city’s stunning skyline, famous landmarks, and local marine life.
Kids will love spotting sea lions lounging on buoys, while adults enjoy guided narration and cool ocean breezes. Several companies offer family-friendly tours that are about one to two hours long.
Top Tip: Since mornings tend to be foggy in May, book an afternoon cruise for a better shot at clear, blue skies.

7. Spend a Day at the San Diego Zoo

May weather is nearly perfect for a zoo day. The animals are active, walking the hilly paths is comfortable, and crowds are lighter than summer vacation season.
With fewer crowds and cooler temperatures, May is ideal for walking the lush paths, watching animals up close, and even riding the Skyfari tram across the treetops.
Arrive early to take advantage of cooler morning temperatures and shorter lines. Indoor exhibits and shaded habitats make it an easy all-day activity for families.

8. Visit LEGOLAND California

May is an excellent time to visit LEGOLAND before school lets out for summer. Lines are typically shorter (especially on weekdays), and the weather is comfortable for exploring the park.
Seasonal shows and special events often run in late spring, so check the calendar before your visit.
LEGOLAND California’s newest themed area – Galaxy Land – made its debut in March, bringing out-of-this-world fun to kids and adults alike. With a brand-new roller coaster, junior astronaut play zones, and interactive space-themed attractions, this expansion adds a major reason to visit LEGOLAND in May.
LEGOLAND California also has a seasonal water park, which opens on March 21, 2026, so you can plan to go if you are visiting San Diego in May.
The main thing to know is that although the LEGOLAND Water Park is separate, it is only accessible through LEGOLAND. Therefore, you cannot buy just a ticket to the water park; you must purchase admission to LEGOLAND in order to access the water park, too.
LEGOLAND-only tickets do not include admission into the water park but can be upgraded to include same-day admission. This is a nice add-on, especially if you encounter an especially warm day in May.
9. Visit The Flower Fields Before They Close

Early May is the final opportunity to see the vibrant ranunculus blooms at The Flower Fields in Carlsbad before the season ends. For 2026, the Flower Fields are open every day between March 1 and May 10.
If you’re visiting San Diego before May 10, this is a must-see spring highlight. The Flower Fields in Carlsbad burst into an ocean of vibrant color with nearly 50 acres of ranunculus flowers. Wander through fragrant fields, hop on tractor wagon rides, and enjoy family-friendly activities against a stunning backdrop of bold, blooming flowers.

10. Go Whale Watching (Final Weeks of Season)

Gray whale migration winds down in May, but you may still spot whales early in the month. Blue whales begin arriving later in spring, kicking off summer whale-watching season.
There are a number of whale watching tours in San Diego you can hop aboard. Boat tours depart from Mission Bay, San Diego Bay, and La Jolla and typically last two and a half to three hours. They provide excellent opportunities to see these majestic creatures up close, often accompanied by dolphins and sea lions.
There are always tour guides or marine naturalists on board to narrate what’s going on and answer your questions.
Top Tip: Make sure to bring binoculars and a windbreaker; the ocean breeze can be brisk even on sunny days.
11. Spend a Day at SeaWorld San Diego

From thrilling rides to fun and educational shows featuring dolphins, beluga whales, sea lions, and other marine life, SeaWorld San Diego is one of the most popular theme parks in California and a must-see attraction when you’re visiting San Diego.
In recent years, the park has really upped its game in with more thrill rides and exhibits. Kids will love the variety of great roller coasters, including Manta, Emperor, Electric Eel, and their newest ride, Arctic Rescue. 12. Catch a Padres Game at Petco Park

Baseball season is in full swing in May, and an evening San Diego Padres game at Petco Park is a quintessential San Diego experience if your family is into baseball!
There are plenty of home games throughout the month of May. Petco Park is located downtown near the Gaslamp Quarter and waterfront, and the stadium’s family-friendly atmosphere makes it a great way to spend a few hours. The stadium offers incredible downtown views, family-friendly sections, and plenty of food options. Evening temperatures are ideal for sitting outdoors comfortably.
Kids will love the Park at the Park, an open grassy area with a playground and plenty of space to run around.
13. Explore La Jolla & Kayak the Sea Caves

Warmer weather makes May a wonderful time to kayak in La Jolla, home to one of the most beautiful stretches of beach on the west coast. An amazing way to explore it is on a Ocean kayaking is an amazing way to explore the coastline.
Paddle through sea caves, spot sea lions, and marvel at the underwater marine life. Guided tours are available and I recommend this instead of going out on your own, because they point out stuff you might otherwise miss, so it adds a lot to your excursion. My family went on the La Jolla Sea Caves Kayak Tour and had an amazing time.
Tours provide wetsuits, and wildlife sightings may include sea lions, dolphins, and even leopard sharks later in the month.
14. Enjoy the USS Midway Museum

May is a fantastic month to tour the USS Midway Museum, an aircraft carrier turned floating museum now permanently docked on the Embarcadero in downtown San Diego. The USS Midway is America’s longest-serving aircraft carriers, serving from 1945 to 1992.
The USS Midway is one of the best interactive museums in San Diego. Once onboard, the flight deck offers clear views of San Diego Bay, and the indoor exhibits provide shade if the sun comes out strong. You can explore aircraft carriers, sit in fighter jets, and learn about naval aviation through interactive exhibits and the self-guided audio tour.
We’ve visited this museum several times over the years, most recently when my son was in high school and very interested in learning about the military. It was wonderful to get up close and personal not just with the ship, but also with the many aircraft and fighter jets on the flight deck.
15. Go for a Hike

May is a great time to explore kid-friendly hiking trails like Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve, Cabrillo National Monument, or Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve. Cool mornings are perfect for spending time on the trails.
Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve is one of our favorite spots to hike, with dramatic ocean views and a variety of family-friendly trails. The park features breathtaking ocean views and unique coastal landscapes.
Some other popular hiking spots you may want to explore include:
- Mission Trails Regional Park – More than 8,000 acres with miles of trails at varying levels of difficulty.
- Cabrillo National Monument – Tide pools, whale watching, and scenic vistas.
- Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve – Easy trails with waterfalls and wildlife.
- San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve – Trails here pass through different types of wetlands environments, including salt marshes and freshwater areas.
