You might hear the term “June Gloom” when planning a visit to San Diego in June, but don’t let cloudy weather in the forecast keep you away! It is still a great time of year to visit.
June in San Diego brings longer days, lively beach energy, and the start of peak travel season. While early summer crowds begin to arrive, the city still maintains a relaxed coastal vibe. You’ll find plenty of outdoor events, festivals, and family-friendly activities, making it a great month for a vacation.

San Diego Weather in June
June weather in San Diego is mild and pleasant, although coastal areas often experience the well-known “June Gloom” marine layer.
You can expect:
- Daytime highs: around 70-75°
- Evenings: mid-60s°
- Rain: very unlikely
- Morning clouds: Overcast mornings are common, especially near the coast, with sunshine usually appearing in the afternoon
By June the ocean is warming up, and beaches become much more active with swimmers, surfers, and families enjoying the water. If you are planning to go to the beach, do it in the afternoon when skies are clearer.
Top Tip: Mornings and evenings near the coast can feel cool, especially if marine layer clouds linger, so be sure to bring a sweater or light jacket.
Things to Do in San Diego in June
1. Hit the Beaches
June marks the beginning of true beach season in San Diego. While mornings may start cloudy, afternoons are typically sunny and perfect for enjoying the coast.
One of the wonderful things I love about San Diego is its variety of beaches. For instance, in spots like Mission Beach and Oceanside, you’ll find endless stretches of smooth sand and an energetic boardwalk scene, while La Jolla is known for its gorgeous cliffs and tide pools.
Many beaches in San Diego also have piers you can walk out onto and grab an ice cream, go fishing, or just enjoy the views.
Here are a few of our favorite beaches:
- Mission Beach features a lively boardwalk, bike rentals, and easy access to Belmont Park.
- La Jolla Shores is ideal for families thanks to its wide sandy beach and gentle waves.
- Coronado Beach offers soft white sand and iconic views with the historic Hotel del Coronado as a backdrop.
- Silver Strand State Beach is located just south of Coronado and typically offers a more relaxed beach experience.
- Del Mar not only has a beautiful beach, there are tons of restaurants and fun things to do in Del Mar nearby, including Torrey Pines State Park.
Many beaches in San Diego – such as Oceanside and Pacific Beach – have piers you can walk out onto and grab lunch, go fishing, or just enjoy the coastal views. During summer in San Diego, most beaches are staffed with lifeguards, and all have restroom facilities.

2. Go to the Fair
The San Diego County Fair is one of the most popular summer events in the region and a must-do if you’re visiting in June!
Held at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, the fair features classic carnival rides, live entertainment, agricultural exhibits, and – of course – over-the-top fair food (think deep-fried everything!). Kids will love the games, animal exhibits, and interactive displays, while adults can enjoy concerts, craft beer tastings, and special themed events.
For 2026, the San Diego County Fair theme will be “Once Upon a Fair” and will take place from June 10 through July 5, 2026.
Though it can be hard (to me anyway!) to see the appeal of a County Fair when there are so many amazing amusement parks in Southern California, if you love traditional fair food, carnival rides and games, live concerts, farm animals and more, spending a day at the fair can be a very fun experience for families. The theme changes every year.

3. Spend a Day at the San Diego Zoo
Summer hours begin in June, which means more time to explore one of the world’s most famous zoos. Arrive early to beat crowds and take advantage of cooler morning temperatures.
The zoo is huge. With more than 100 acres to explore, plan on spending an entire day here so you don’t have to rush. Animals are typically most active earlier in the day, and shaded paths help keep things comfortable as the day warms up. It should also be noted that there are lots of hills, so it may take extra time getting around, especially if you have to push a stroller or keep little kids rounded up for the walk.

4. Explore Balboa Park
Balboa Park is one of my favorite places in all of San Diego! The park is home to more than a dozen Balboa Park museums, numerous beautiful gardens, the Spanish Village Art Center, Balboa Park International Cottages, the Old Globe Theatre, playgrounds, a carousel, and of course the San Diego Zoo.
The park is full of energy in June, with street performers, gardens in bloom, and extended museum hours. It’s a perfect mix of indoor and outdoor activities, which is especially helpful if the marine layer lingers in the morning.

- Inez Grant Parker Memorial Rose Garden
The Inez Grant Parker Memorial Rose Garden can be easy to miss since if you don’t know it’s there since you need to cross Park Boulevard to see it. Use the pedestrian bridge adjacent to the San Diego Natural History Museum. Home to a stunning display of approximately 1,600 roses, including more than 130 varieties, the rose garden reaches peak bloom in May and June, so this is the perfect time to visit!

5. Spend a Day at SeaWorld San Diego
From thrilling rides to fun and educational shows featuring dolphins, beluga whales, sea lions, and other marine life, SeaWorld San Diego is one of the most popular theme parks in California and a must-see attraction when you’re visiting San Diego.
Summer programming kicks off in June at SeaWorld, with extended hours, seasonal shows, and a new nighttime drone show.
This month you can also check out the all new Shark Encounter exhibit, which opened May 22 after an extended renovation. This expanded exhibit will let you experience the ocean like never before in a enhanced space that pulls you into an immersive realm, celebrating the beauty and power of sharks while challenging long-held myths about this extraordinary species.
You’ll also be able to catch the new Dolphin Adventures show, and many more thrill rides and exhibits.

6. Take a Harbor Cruise
June is a great time to get out on the water. Whether you choose a narrated harbor cruise or a sunset sailing experience, you’ll enjoy cool ocean breezes and beautiful views of the San Diego skyline, famous landmarks, and local marine life.
Taking a tour of the harbor is not only a great way to see San Diego, a narrated tour shares the city’s history, sights, and even offers great views of the seals laying out in the sun. And that nice ocean breeze is the perfect way to stay cool when you visit San Diego in the summer. Kids will love spotting sea lions lounging on buoys, while you’ll enjoy the cool ocean breezes. Several companies offer family-friendly tours that are about one to two hours long.
We recently took the Scenic 90-Minute Narrated Harbor Tour with City Cruises. What I liked about this tour in particular is it is the same boat they use for their San Diego brunch and dinner cruises, so there is plenty of comfortable indoor seating as well as chairs outside.
Evenings are especially pleasant this time of year, making sunset cruises a memorable family-friendly activity.
Top Tip: Since mornings tend to be foggy in June, book an afternoon cruise for a better shot at clear, blue skies.

7. Visit LEGOLAND California
June is a popular time to visit LEGOLAND as schools let out for summer. Expect bigger crowds, but also longer hours, special seasonal entertainment, and access to the LEGOLAND Water Park to make it all worthwhile!
LEGOLAND California’s newest themed area – Galaxy Land – made its debut in March, bringing out-of-this-world fun to kids and adults alike. With a brand-new roller coaster, junior astronaut play zones, and interactive space-themed attractions, this expansion adds a major reason to visit LEGOLAND this summer.
LEGOLAND California also has a seasonal water park. Regular theme park tickets do not include admission into LEGOLAND Water Park but can be upgraded to include same-day admission. This is a nice add-on, especially if you encounter an especially warm day in June!

8. Explore La Jolla & Kayak the Sea Caves
June is a great time to kayak in La Jolla’s sea caves. Even if you stay on land, coastal walks and visits to La Jolla Cove are beautiful this time of year.
Warmer weather makes June a great time to kayak in La Jolla, home to one of the most beautiful stretches of beach on the west coast. An amazing way to explore it is on a Ocean kayaking is an amazing way to explore the coastline.
Paddle through sea caves, spot sea lions, and marvel at the underwater marine life. Guided tours are available and I recommend this instead of going out on your own, because they point out stuff you might otherwise miss, so it adds a lot to your excursion. My family went on the La Jolla Sea Caves Kayak Tour and had an amazing time.
Tours provide wetsuits, and wildlife sightings may include sea lions, dolphins, and even leopard sharks later in the month.
The great thing about kayaking this time of year is that after your excursion you can stay and enjoy the beach!
9. Enjoy the USS Midway Museum
June is an ideal time of year to visit the USS Midway Museum, an aircraft carrier turned floating museum now permanently docked on the Embarcadero in downtown San Diego. The USS Midway is America’s longest-serving aircraft carriers, serving from 1945 to 1992.
The USS Midway is one of the best interactive museums in San Diego. Once onboard, the flight deck offers clear views of San Diego Bay, and the indoor exhibits provide shade if the sun comes out strong. You can explore aircraft carriers, sit in fighter jets, and learn about naval aviation through interactive exhibits and the self-guided audio tour.
We’ve visited this museum several times over the years, most recently when my son was in high school and very interested in learning about the military. It was wonderful to get up close and personal not just with the ship, but also with the many aircraft and fighter jets on the flight deck. This museum is one of the best things to do in San Diego with teens.
After spending time exploring the USS Midway Museum, take some time to stroll down the Embarcadero, enjoy the waterfront, and then check out Seaport Village San Diego. It’s a spot to enjoy a nice meal or do a little souvenir shopping.

10. Catch a Padres Game at Petco Park
Baseball season is in full swing, and June evenings are perfect for catching a San Diego Padres game at Petco Park. The stadium’s downtown location, great food, and family-friendly atmosphere make it a must-do summer activity.
Petco Park is located downtown near the Gaslamp Quarter and waterfront, and the stadium’s family-friendly atmosphere makes it a great way to spend a few hours. The stadium offers incredible downtown views, family-friendly sections, and plenty of food options. Evening temperatures are ideal for sitting outdoors comfortably.
Kids will love the Park at the Park, an open grassy area with a playground and plenty of space to run around.

11. See San Diego on the Hop On Hop Off Trolley
Riding the San Diego Hop On Hop Off Trolley is the perfect way to maximize your time and get around, all while learning some cool facts about the city. Honestly, it’s a tour you can enjoy any time of year.

This is the one tour I always recommend to people visiting San Diego, especially if it is their first time. If for no other reason, riding over the Coronado Bridge in an open-air trolley is exhilarating.

12. Go for a Hike
May is a great time to explore kid-friendly hiking trails like Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve, Cabrillo National Monument, or Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve. Cool mornings are perfect for spending time on the trails.
Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve is one of our favorite spots to hike, with dramatic ocean views and a variety of family-friendly trails. The park features breathtaking ocean views and unique coastal landscapes.
Some other popular hiking spots you may want to explore include:
- Mission Trails Regional Park – More than 8,000 acres with miles of trails at varying levels of difficulty.
- Cabrillo National Monument – Tide pools, whale watching, and scenic vistas.
- Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve – Easy trails with waterfalls and wildlife.
- San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve – Trails here pass through different types of wetlands environments, including salt marshes and freshwater areas.
Top Tip: Inland temperatures tend to be warmer than the beaches, so consider heading east on cooler days.
13. Visit Seaport Village
Seaport Village is a lively 14-acre waterfront park with shopping and dining right on the harbor in downtown San Diego.
Visiting Seaport Village is a great activity to enjoy during the summertime. You can poke through the many shops, enjoy a meal on the waterfront, or just get some exercise walking along the waterfront. Live music, artisans, and entertainers make Seaport Village a lively spot. There is also a wonderful old merry-go-round for the kids.
If you are in Seaport Village and want to hop on a great tour, I recommend the San Diego Seal Tour. This kid-friendly tour is awesome because it travels on both land and water! The amphibious bus departs from the heart of Seaport Village and takes you on a tour of the city before slipping into San Diego Bay for a ride past SeaWorld and other waterfront points of interest. It is like two tours in one, and a huge hit if you are traveling with kids!

15. Coronado Island
A trip to Coronado Island is a must in June. With wide sandy beaches, charming streets, and stunning views of the San Diego skyline, it’s one of the most picturesque spots in the region and a great place to visit this time of year.
Located just across the bay from downtown San Diego, there are tons of fun things to do on Coronado Island with kids. Coronado has one of the best stretches of sand in Southern California, plus there are lots of family-friendly activities, great restaurants and shops on Orange Avenue, and the world-famous Hotel Del Coronado perched on its shore.
There are places to rent beach gear right on the sand if you don’t have your own. For a relaxed day, bring a frisbee and set up on the soft, sandy beach.
Also worth noting, Silver Strand State Beach is just a few miles south of Coronado, near Loews Coronado Bay Resort. It tends to be a little quieter, but the ocean waves and shoreline are equally perfect. Silver Strand is also home to Coronado Surfing Academy, where you can sign up for surfing lessons.
If you want to go to Coronado Island, my best advice is to arrive early! Traffic can be a beast, and parking is nearly impossible once it gets to be later in the day. Getting there early might even score you a free spot on one of the side streets near the beach.
