Planning a San Diego February getaway? You’re in luck! February is a fantastic month to visit.
While much of the country is still cold and grey, San Diego enjoys mild temperatures, plenty of sunshine, and fewer tourists than peak months. That also means lower hotel prices, easier parking, and more room to enjoy the city’s top attractions. You’ll probably still need a jacket (swimsuit season doesn’t really start until May!) but as a local I can tell you, San Diego in February is a great time to visit!

February is still winter in San Diego, but temperatures remain mild compared to other parts of the U.S.
The mix of crisp mornings and sunny afternoons makes it ideal for sightseeing, hiking, and enjoying outdoor activities without the crowds. And of course, if you do get a rainy day, there are plenty of indoor activities worth checking out.
You can expect:
- Daytime highs: 64–68°F
- Evenings: Cool, dipping into the upper 40s–low 50s°F
- Rain: A few rainy days, so bring a light jacket or umbrella
- Wind: Coastal areas can feel cooler, especially near sunset or on the water
The ocean is still too cold for swimming for most people, but you’ll see surfers in wet suits enjoying the waves (and maybe a few other brave souls!).
Top Tip: Dress in layers! T-shirts and jeans work well during the day, but a medium-weight jacket or sweater is essential for evenings. Comfortable walking shoes are a must for exploring the city.

1. Take Advantage of Museum Month
The highlight of February is hands-down San Diego Museum Month.
Throughout the entire month, more than 70 museums and attractions offer half price admission. This is a perfect opportunity to explore the city’s cultural landmarks while saving some money.
Some of the highlights (and my personal favorites) include:
- USS Midway Museum – America’s longest-serving aircraft carrier, now a floating museum.
- San Diego Natural History Museum – One of the most popular museums in Balboa Park, with fossils, regional wildlife, and rotating exhibits.
- San Diego Museum of Art – Explore classic and contemporary art in beautiful Balboa Park.
- Fleet Science Center – One of the best interactive museums in San Diego with hands-on exhibits and an IMAX theater.
- San Diego Air & Space Museum – Aviation history and interactive exhibits kids and adults alike will love.
- LEGOLAND California – From fun rides and shows to LEGO building stations, this theme park is a thrill for younger kids and half-price tickets are a steal!
2. Ride the San Diego Hop On Hop Off Trolley
Tour the city’s top sights comfortably in a climate-controlled trolley, stopping at locations like Balboa Park, Gaslamp Quarter, Coronado Island, and Seaport Village.
Taking a ride on the San Diego Hop On Hop Off Trolley is the perfect way to maximize your time in San Diego (without spending too much time outdoors if it’s rainy or cold), see all the top sights, and hear some cool facts about America’s Finest City.
The fully narrated bus tour lets you get on and off at any of 11 stops, including Seaport Village San Diego, Balboa Park, the Gaslamp Quarter, Coronado Island, Little Italy, and many more. It’s an easy, fun, and family-friendly way to explore San Diego.
This tour is also great if you are visiting San Diego in January, because – although it is considered an open-air trolley (great for summer in San Diego when the weather is warm) – during the colder months the windows can be rolled down. So, you’ll be riding around in a climate-controlled vehicle and still able to enjoy all the sights in comfort.
3. Take a Whale Watching Cruise
Gray whales are still migrating south to Baja California in February, making this prime whale-watching season.
There are a number of whale watching tours in San Diego you can hop aboard. The boat tours depart from a couple different locations and typically last two and a half to three hours. There are always tour guides or marine naturalists on board to narrate what’s going on and answer your questions. Guided tours depart from Mission Bay, San Diego Harbor, or La Jolla, with naturalists providing fun and educational commentary.
Expect stunning views, cool coastal breezes, and sightings of dolphins and sea lions as well. Even if you don’t take a whale watching tour you might spot spouts and fins, especially from Point Loma or Cabrillo National Monument.

4. Cabrillo National Monument
Cabrillo National Monument is a standout destination for February in San Diego, especially for its incredible tide pools.
Winter low tides create perfect conditions for exploring the rocky shoreline. February’s cooler temperatures make walking the trails and exploring the tide pools much more comfortable than in the summer.
In addition to tide pooling, you can take in sweeping views of downtown San Diego, the Pacific Ocean, and Coronado Island from the monument. Yu may even spot migrating gray whales offshore.
This combination of education, scenery, and outdoor exploration makes Cabrillo National Monument a must-visit in February.

5. Visit the San Diego Botanic Garden
Located in Encinitas, the San Diego Botanic Garden is a peaceful and surprisingly colorful place to visit in February. Thanks to winter rains, the garden is lush and green, and early blooms begin popping up throughout the 37-acre property.
Cooler temperatures during February in San Diego make walking the garden’s winding paths comfortable, and crowds are much lighter than during peak spring months.
If you are visiting with kids, be sure to take them to the interactive Hamilton Children’s Garden, which features treehouses, a climbing mound, and nature-inspired play areas.

6. Tide Pooling in San Diego
Speaking of tide pools, February is one of the best months of the year for tide pooling thanks to low tides and excellent ocean visibility.
Early-morning low tides expose rocky shorelines all along the coast where you can spot sea stars, anemones, hermit crabs, and small fish. Popular tide pooling locations include La Jolla Cove, Shell Beach, Sunset Cliffs, and Terramar Beach in Carlsbad.
Cooler temps keep crowds away (since it’s not traditional summer beach weather), allowing more time and space to explore to shoreline. Be sure to wear water shoes or sturdy sandals and remind children to look, not touch, to help protect these delicate marine habitats.
7. Spend a Day at the San Diego Zoo
Wintertime is a great time of year to visit the iconic San Diego Zoo. The cooler temperatures make walking the zoo’s hilly paths much more comfortable, and the animals tend to be far more active compared to hot summer afternoons.
With lighter crowds, you’ll also enjoy shorter lines, easier parking, and a more relaxed visit.
Beyond its 100 acres of habitats, the zoo offers a variety of ways to warm up if February brings rain or cold weather. Indoor exhibits such as the Reptile House, the African Rocks aviaries, and the 4D Theater provide quick breaks from the cold. And if you prefer not to walk the entire zoo, the Kangaroo Bus makes it easy to hop between major areas without missing the highlights.

8. Stroll Through Old Town San Diego
Old Town San Diego is a lively area full of shops, museums, and restaurants. With mild February weather, it’s perfect for strolling outdoors while popping into shops and historical buildings.
Known as the birthplace of California, Old Town State Historic Park is the site of the first Spanish settlement in California, founded in in 1769. Today, it is a lively attraction with 50 shops and restaurants and numerous museums and historic sites – many of which are free to explore. We love visiting Old Town San Diego! There is always something fun to see, and if you like Mexican food, Old Town is home to some of the best kid-friendly restaurants in San Diego. Many restaurants have outdoor seating with heat lamps, so you can enjoy dining outdoors even if it’s chilly.
There is also a stage in the Fiesta de Reyes courtyard in Old Town where you can enjoy free entertainment if you are visiting San Diego at night.

9. Visit Birch Aquarium
Birch Aquarium in La Jolla is perfect for cooler February days, with indoor galleries showcasing sea dragons, reef fish, and hands-on tide pools. Outside on the patio, you can take in sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean.
Operated by the renowned Scripps Institution of Oceanography, the aquarium offers a fascinating look at marine science, conservation, and ocean habitats – without the overwhelming size of larger aquariums.
Be sure to check out the Hall of Fishes, where kids can get close to sea stars, urchins, and hermit crabs at their hands-on tide pools.

10. Take a Hike or Scenic Walk
Cooler weather makes it a great time to explore kid-friendly hiking trails like Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve, Cabrillo National Monument, or Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve.

Some other popular hiking spots you may want to explore include:
- Mission Trails Regional Park – More than 8,000 acres with miles of trails at varying levels of difficulty.
- Cabrillo National Monument – Tide pools, whale watching, and scenic vistas.
- Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve – Easy trails with waterfalls and wildlife.
Top Tip: Inland temperatures tend to be warmer than the beaches, so consider heading east on cooler days.
