2. Knottโ€™s Berry Farm

Calico Mine Ride at Knott's Berry Farm
Entrance to the Calico Mine Ride at Knott’s Berry Farm.

Located in nearby Buena Park, Knottโ€™s Berry Farm is one of the best theme parks in Southern California for families. Originally starting as a small berry farm and restaurant, Knottโ€™s has grown into a full-scale amusement park packed with roller coasters, live entertainment, family rides, and kid-friendly attractions.

One of the things I love most about Knottโ€™s Berry Farm is that it offers something for every age group. Younger children will love Camp Snoopy, a Peanuts-themed area filled with kiddie rides and play spaces, while older kids and teens can tackle thrill rides like GhostRider and Silver Bullet.

Our favorite ride at Knottโ€™s Berry Farm is still the classic Calico Mine Ride. The ride, opened in 1960, carries you aboard ore cars through the dimly lit tunnels of a working gold mine. The winding journey will take you past underground lakes, waterfalls, geysers, and caverns filled with thousands of formations.

If you are visiting in the summer, Knottโ€™s Soak City is a water park right across from the park. Itโ€™s a fun place to go to cool off with a water ride or two and some amazing water slides.

Knottโ€™s Berry Farm is also famous for its seasonal events, including Knottโ€™s Scary Farm (one of the largest Halloween events in the country). They also have Knottโ€™s Boysenberry Festival in the spring and the very festive Knottโ€™s Merry Farm during the holiday season in Orange County.

Why Itโ€™s Great for Families: Knottโ€™s Berry Farm offers a great balance of thrill rides, attractions for younger kids, and family entertainment. The park is often more affordable and easier to navigate than larger theme parks.

3. Six Flags Magic Mountain

Six Flags Magic Mountain Theme Park in Southern California
Six Flags Magic Mountain near L.A.

If your family loves roller coasters and adrenaline-pumping rides, Six Flags Magic Mountain is hard to beat. Located north of Los Angeles in Valencia, this massive amusement park is known for having one of the largest collections of roller coasters in the world.

As the mom of a teenager, we’ve been here many times over the years! The park features some of the best coasters, including Twisted Colossus, X2, Tatsu, and Full Throttle. Thereโ€™s also a separate area called Bugs Bunny World designed specifically for little kids.

While Six Flags is definitely best suited for older kids, teenagers, and thrill-seeking adults, families with younger children can still find plenty to enjoy throughout the park.

Be prepared for a full day of walking, especially during warmer months, as the park is very large and temperatures in Valencia can get extremely hot in summer. There are also lots of steep hills between the different areas of the park.

Why Itโ€™s Great for Families: Six Flags Magic Mountain is ideal for families with teens and older kids who love roller coasters and high-energy attractions.

4. Disneyland

Disneyland and Disney California Adventure Park

No list of family-friendly things to do near Los Angeles would be complete without mentioning the Disneyland Resort. Located about an hour south of L.A. in Anaheim, Disneyland Park has been creating memories for families since opening in 1955 as Walt Disneyโ€™s original theme park. In 2001, Disney California Adventure opened right next door, and together they’ve become one of the most family-friendly destinations on the west coast.

From iconic attractions like Pirates of the Caribbean, Haunted Mansion, and โ€œitโ€™s a small worldโ€ to newer favorites inside Star Wars: Galaxyโ€™s Edge, Disneyland offers something for every age group. The park is beautifully themed, incredibly immersive, and filled with classic Disney details around every corner.

If you are short on time and want to visit both Disneyland and Disney California Adventure theme parks, consider purchasing Park Hopper tickets so you can go back and forth between the two. However, I recommend at least two days at the Disneyland Resort so you have ample time to enjoy both parks.

Why Itโ€™s Great for Families: Disneyland is designed for families, with attractions and entertainment suitable for toddlers, teens, and adults alike. The immersive lands, beloved characters, and nostalgic atmosphere make it one of the best family destinations in California.

5. Warner Bros. Studio Tour

Warner Bros. Studios Tour near Universal Studios Hollywood
Exploring the backlot on the Warner Bros. Studios Tour.

Warner Bros. Studio Tour offers the chance to go behind the scenes of an active, working film studio. More than a tour, a visit to Warner Bros. Studio will give you a close-up look at some iconic TV sound stages, movie sets, costumes, and props. My son and I recently took the tour, and it was a lot of fun!

Warner Bros. Studio Tour combines a guided tour led by an expert who drives you around the 110-acre studio backlot pointing out various sets and buildings. Youโ€™ll also get to walk through indoor and outdoor sets and pose for a photo in front of the fountain from Friends or the Central Perk set.

After the guided tour, spend the rest of your visit wandering at your own pace as you check out several exhibits. Some of the spots we enjoyed most were the Storytelling Showcase, Friends and Big Bang Theory sets, and Script to Screen interactive sound stage.

See costumes from The Big Bang Theory on display at the Warner Bros. Studio Tour.

I really liked how there is a mix of guided tour and areas where you can wander around on your own. It’s nice to be able to set your own pace and not feel rushed while looking at the displays.

Why Itโ€™s Great for Families: For families with older kids and teens, this behind-the-scenes experience brings their favorite movies and shows to life. Interactive exhibits, like posing on iconic sets, provide fun and memorable photo opportunities.

6. Hollywood Walk of Fame

Stars from our walk along the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Is there anything more โ€œHollywoodโ€ than checking out the stars along the Hollywood Walk of Fame?

This famous stretch of sidewalk is located along Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street. You can wander along the street checking out Hollywood stars from the Golden Era until now in television, movies, radio, music, and theater. There are more than 2,700 stars on the Walk of Fame. (It’s also pretty cool to see all the old art deco buildings.)

And it is not just real people who have been honored with their own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame! Keep an eye out for stars for Donald Duck, Snoopy, Snow White, The Simpsons, Mickey Mouse, and many more.

โ–บ Travel Insight

The Hollywood Walk of Fame is an iconic L.A. attraction, but the area can be a little sketchy. Visit during the daytime if you have kids in tow!

I would be remiss not to mention that the Hollywood Walk of Fame was recently ranked one of the worst tourist destinations in the world (based on Google reviews and other data), and I have to admit I agree. In my honest opinion this attraction is overrated and the area tends to be dirty and crowded.

HOWEVER. If you are visiting Los Angeles for the first time or want to experience the energy and history of Hollywood for yourself, this is where you need come.

Why Itโ€™s Great for Families: Spotting stars of beloved characters like Mickey Mouse and Shrek adds a touch of magic for little kids. Exploring this iconic attraction during the daytime ensures a safe, fun outing for all.

  • Stars are located on Hollywood Blvd from Gower to La Brea and on Vine Street from Sunset to Yucca

7. Hop-On Hop-Off Bus Tour

The Big Bus Los Angeles Tour stop in front of Hollywood Wax Museum.

Seeing Los Angeles with kids can feel overwhelming. The city is spread out, traffic is real, and parking adds up fast. A Hop-On Hop-Off bus tour is an easy way to get oriented while covering many of L.A.โ€™s top attractions in one go.

Companies like Big Bus Tours Los Angeles operate open-air double-decker buses that run along multiple routes connecting popular spots like Hollywood Boulevard, Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, Venice Beach, and Downtown L.A. You can hop off at any stop to explore, then hop back on when youโ€™re ready to continue.

I like this tour because the audio commentary shares fun facts and history of each location as you ride the loop, which makes sightseeing interesting (and educational).

Why Itโ€™s Great for Families: Kids love riding on the open-top buses, and parents love not having to navigate traffic or parking. Itโ€™s especially helpful for first-time visitors who want a big-picture overview of Los Angeles while still having the flexibility to explore different attractions at their own pace.

The El Capitan Theatre during our visit in October.

While you’re exploring Hollywood, plan a visit to El Capitan Theatre.

For families who love movies, the El Capitan Theatre is a magical experience. This historic theater, located near Disneyโ€™s Hollywood studios, hosts live shows and screenings of the latest Disney films. 9.  Hike to the Hollywood Sign

You can climb up to the famous Hollywood sign.

One of the most famous landmarks in California, the Hollywood sign โ€“ established in 1923 โ€“ originally read โ€œHollywoodlandโ€ to promote a new housing development. One hundred years later, people still flock to the area to see and photograph this famous sign. Hiking the hills that surround Hollywood is one of the best ways to experience this attraction!

There are a number of hiking trails that will lead you to the Hollywood sign, ranging from an easy loop to 6+ mile treks for a more challenging hike. Either way, youโ€™ll enjoy plenty of scenic spots along the way.

If a guided hike sounds more appealing, check out this Official Hollywood Sign Hike.  A guide will lead you on a 2.5-hour walking tour that combines history and sightseeing with a vigorous walk up to the Hollywood sign and lots of photo stops on the trail.

Why Itโ€™s Great for Families: The trails offer varying difficulty levels, so families can choose one that suits their abilities. The scenic views and photo opportunities make it an unforgettable bonding experience.
