15 Best San Diego Beach Hotels & Oceanfront Resorts (2026)
Last updated on September 28, 2026

Looking for the best San Diego beach hotels for your next vacation?
If so, you’ve come to the right place! This article details the 15 best beach hotels in San Diego for families – with options for every budget – to help you plan an incredible getaway.
Staying along the coast is one of my favorite ways to experience San Diego, whether you want a full-service resort steps from the sand, a stylish boutique property, or a more affordable place to sleep near the beach.
I’ve lived in Southern California for more than 20 years and have spent countless days exploring San Diego’s beaches and coastal communities. I can say from experience there is no better treat than waking up close to the ocean. I am excited to share this list with you!

One thing I’ve learned is that “beachfront” can mean very different things in San Diego. Some hotels sit directly on the sand, while others are above the beach on a bluff, across the street, or along the boardwalk. I’ve included both true beachfront properties and a few exceptional coastal hotels, but I’ll clearly explain the beach access at each one so you know what you’re booking.
Whether you’re planning a family beach vacation, a romantic coastal getaway, or simply want to wake up to Pacific Ocean views, these are the best San Diego beach hotels to consider.
Quick Picks: Best San Diego Beach Hotels
Don’t have time to read the entire list? These are my top picks for different types of San Diego beach vacations.
- Best Overall: Hotel del Coronado
- Best for Families: La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club
- Best Carlsbad Beach Hotel: Beach Terrace Inn
- Best Pacific Beach Hotel: Pacific Terrace Hotel
- Best Marriott Beach Hotel: Pier South Resort
- Best Upscale Boutique Hotel: L’Auberge Del Mar
- Best Budget Option: Ocean Beach Hotel
What Does “Beachfront” Actually Mean in San Diego?
Before booking a hotel for your beach vacation, it’s worth understanding the terminology.
Directly on the Beach
These are the hotels I would choose if your top priority is being able to walk from your hotel directly onto the sand without crossing a street.
Examples include Hotel del Coronado, La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club, Beach Terrace, and Pier South Resort.
Beachfront or Boardwalk
Some hotels are immediately adjacent to the beach but have a public boardwalk between the hotel and sand. This can still provide an excellent oceanfront experience, but it’s worth knowing the distinction.
Oceanfront Bluffs
San Diego’s coastline has some spectacular bluff-top hotels. These properties have incredible ocean views, but you’ll need to take stairs or a path down to the beach. This is important to keep in mind, especially if traveling with kids.
Alila Marea, Cape Rey and L’Auberge Del Mar are good examples.
Across the Street
These hotels aren’t technically beachfront, but they can still be excellent choices if you want to be directly across from the ocean.
I prefer to be transparent about these differences rather than call every hotel “oceanfront.”
Best San Diego Beach Hotels & Oceanfront Resorts
Here is a comprehensive list of the best San Diego beach hotels that will leave your family steps away from the sand and waves. To make comparing hotels even easier, I’ve also listed each property’s notable amenities and where you’ll find it along the coast.
1. Hotel Del Coronado

Hotel Del Coronado At-A-Glance
- Location: 1500 Orange Avenue, Coronado
- Best for: Families, first-time visitors, luxury
- Beach access: Directly on the beach
- Pool: Yes
- Beautifully restored historic hotel on Coronado Island
- Numerous room types, suites, villas and cottages
- Sections include The Victorian, The Cabanas, The View, Beach Village, and Shore House at The Del
- Beach rentals and activities
- Multiple on-site restaurants
Hotel Del Coronado is one of the most iconic beach resorts in California and my pick for the best overall San Diego beach hotel.
Built in 1888, this sprawling Victorian hotel has been luring visitors to the beach for more than a century. It has hosted numerous American presidents, foreign dignitaries, royalty, and celebrities, making it one of America’s most historic hotels. Its Victorian architecture, extensive grounds, waterfront dining options, pools, spa, live music, and beach activities make it so much more than simply a place to sleep near the ocean.
All hotel accommodations have been upgraded to include modern amenities.
Even if you’re not staying there, visiting the Del is one of the most popular things to do in Coronado. It has the perfect location right on Coronado Beach, and it is a beautiful resort just to wander through and maybe grab an ice cream cone or cocktail. We love having dinner at this hotel and timing it so we can enjoy the sunset views while we eat.
Why I Recommend Hotel del Coronado
The location is hard to beat. You can spend the morning on Coronado Beach, walk into the village for lunch, return to the resort for the pool, and finish the day watching the sunset from the property.
It also works particularly well for families because there are plenty of activities beyond simply sitting on the beach.
What to Know Before Booking
This is not a budget beach hotel. Rates can be significantly higher than other properties on this list, particularly during peak periods. There are also several different buildings and numerous room types (including ones with a terrace and private beachfront fire pit!) that can significantly vary your room rate.
However, if the experience of staying at an iconic beachfront resort is part of the vacation itself, The Del can be worth the splurge.
2. Pier South Resort

Pier South Resort At-A-Glance
- Location: 800 Seacoast Drive, Imperial Beach
- Best for: Families who want spacious accommodations on the beach
- Beach access: Directly on the beach
- Pool: Yes
- All suites hotel with ocean views and private balconies
- Rooftop terrace with fire pit offering stunning views of the coast
- Spa and fitness center
- Onsite restaurant
Pier South Resort is one of the few San Diego-area beach hotels where you really are right on the sand.
This all-suite resort is part of Marriott’s Autograph Collection, so you can earn or redeem points for your stay! It is the only Marriott beach resort in San Diego.
Located 15 miles south of downtown San Diego in Imperial Beach, Pier South Resort is a modern, luxury beach resort in San Diego offering spacious suites with private balconies, a pool, spa, fitness center, rooftop terrace, and oceanfront dining at Sammy’s Restaurant & Bar.

Why I Recommend Pier South Resort
The hotel is comprised of 78 suites, and I love how there is a separate bedroom and living area. This is great for families who prefer not to have everyone sleep in the same room. However, it is worth mentioning that the bedroom is on the hallway side of the suite, and we could hear people walking by our room at night.
If you are a Marriott Bonvoy member like us, this is an especially great option!
What to Know Before Booking
Imperial Beach is about 20 minutes south of downtown, and considerably farther from many of San Diego’s major attractions than Coronado, La Jolla, or Pacific Beach.
If your vacation is primarily about relaxing at the beach, that’s less of a concern. If you’re planning to spend every day at the San Diego Zoo, SeaWorld, Balboa Park, and other attractions, you’ll need to factor in the driving time.
Also, if your budget allows, this is one hotel where it really pays to book an oceanfront room instead of a partial ocean view. It’s only a few dollars more and will save you from having to look over an alley or side street to see the beach.

3. La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club

La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club At-A-Glance
- Location: 2000 Spindrift Drive, La Jolla
- Best for: Families
- Beach access: Private beachfront
- Pool: Yes
- Food and beverage service on the sand
- Complimentary use of chairs, beach towels, and umbrellas
- Waterfront dining options
- Golf and tennis on-site
- No resort fee
- Free parking
If your priority is a family-friendly hotel where the beach is the star of the vacation, La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club is one of my favorite choices. This resort offers the perfect mix of recreation and relaxation with luxury suites, beachfront guest rooms, and private cottages.
What sets La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club apart is the array of activities available. Lounge on the beach, enjoy swimming, kayaking, and surfing in the Pacific Ocean. There are tennis courts, a pool, oceanfront restaurants, beach barbecues and on-site golf course. There are also plenty of kid-friendly activities, easily making this one of the best San Diego hotels on the beach for an amazing family vacation. It’s a very different experience from staying at a traditional city hotel and driving to the beach.
We stayed here, and one of the highlights was being able to enjoy the water right outside the hotel. My husband and son had a great time snorkeling here, which is one reason I think this property is particularly appealing to families who want to spend their vacation actually experiencing the ocean rather than simply looking at it.
Why I Recommend La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club
The private beach is the biggest advantage. You can settle in for the day without having to pack up the family and drive somewhere else, or even go inside to eat!
Since this resort has its own private beach, they offer food and drink service (including adult beverages!) delivered to you right under your beach umbrella. This super convenient feature easily makes La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club one of the best beach resorts in San Diego for families!
What to Know Before Booking
This is an upscale property, and rates reflect the private beach and resort experience.
It is also worth remembering that La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club is a recreation-oriented property. If your idea of a beach vacation is primarily lounging by a glamorous resort pool, another hotel may suit you better.
For families who want easy access to the ocean, however, this is hard to beat.

4. La Jolla Shores Hotel

La Jolla Shores Hotel At-A-Glance
- Location: 8110 Camino Del Oro, La Jolla
- Best for: A classic family beach vacation
- Beach access: Directly on La Jolla Shores Beach
- Pool: Yes
- Complimentary shuttle service around La Jolla
- Lawn games and seasonal family activities
- Fitness center
- Onsite restaurant
La Jolla Shores Hotel is one of the best choices if your dream San Diego vacation involves walking out of your hotel and onto a wide sandy beach. It is also steps away from all the shops, activities, and restaurants in the Village of La Jolla.
The hotel offers beachfront accommodations with ocean views. It’s also an especially convenient location for families because Kellogg Park, the beach, restaurants, and water activities are all close by.
Why I Recommend La Jolla Shores Hotel
La Jolla Shores is one of my favorite San Diego beaches for families because it combines a broad sandy beach with opportunities for swimming, kayaking, surfing, snorkeling, and other water activities.
This hotel puts you right in the middle of it.
What to Know Before Booking
Pay attention to the room category when booking. If an ocean view or beachfront room is important to you, don’t assume every room has the same view.
This is also more of a relaxed, classic beach hotel than a giant luxury resort.
5. Pacific Terrace Hotel

pacific terrace Hotel At-A-Glance
- Location: 610 Diamond Street, Pacific Beach
- Best for: Families and couples who want a true Pacific Beach stay
- Beach access: Direct beach access
- Pool: Yes
- Fitness center
- Complimentary beach gear and bike rentals
- Onsite cafe
Pacific Terrace Hotel is one of the strongest choices for a true beachfront vacation.
The hotel sits above Pacific Beach with direct access to the sand, an ocean-view pool and hot tub, private patios or balconies, complimentary beach equipment, and bike rentals. The property also recently completed a substantial renovation.
Why I Recommend Pacific Terrace Hotel
This is the kind of hotel I think of when someone tells me they want a classic San Diego beach vacation without sacrificing comfort.
You have the beach immediately outside, the Pacific Beach boardwalk nearby, and restaurants and activities within walking distance.
What to Know Before Booking
Pacific Beach is lively. If you want a quiet, secluded coastal retreat, this wouldn’t be my first choice.
However for families with older children or teens who want easy access to the beach, boardwalk, restaurants, and activities, however, the location is excellent!
6. Tower 23 Hotel

Tower 23 Hotel At-A-Glance
- Location: 423 Felspar Street, Pacific Beach
- Best for: Couples and travelers who want an upscale beach hotel
- Beach access: Beachfront/boardwalk
- Pool: No
- Modern, comfortable rooms and suites
- Rooms feature a balcony or patio with ocean view
- Complimentary beach chairs for hotel guests
- Onsite restaurant
Tower23 is one of the most stylish hotels on this list.
Tower 23 derives its name from the lifeguard tower positioned nearby. It is a three-story, boutique property featuring 44 rooms and suites, all with high-end amenities, patios or balconies, and ocean views. The entire hotel has a sleek and modern beach vibe, with minimalist design and a cool blue color palette that reflects the nearby ocean.
My husband and I stayed at Tower23, and my overall impression is that it feels a bit swankier and less family-oriented than many of the other hotels on this list.
That’s not necessarily a negative.
If you’re traveling as a couple or with older kids and want something stylish, I’d absolutely consider it. If you’re looking for lots of traditional family resort amenities, I’d choose La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club, Pacific Terrace, or another family-focused property instead.

For the best views, head outside to the Tower Deck for sweeping views of the beach and Crystal Pier. It is the perfect place to catch the sunset at night!
Why I Recommend Tower 23
If you want a San Diego beach hotel that feels more boutique and sophisticated than traditional family resort, Tower23 is a great option.
The location is excellent for walking along the beach and boardwalk, watching the sunset, and enjoying Pacific Beach restaurants and nightlife.
What to Know Before Booking
There is no onsite pool, and the atmosphere is more boutique hotel than full-service family resort.
7. The Wayfarer San Diego

The Wayfarer San Diego At-A-Glance
- Location: 707 Pacific Beach Drive, San Diego
- Best for: Families and active beach vacations
- Beach access: Directly on the boardwalk
- Pool: Yes
- Private balconies
- Recently renovated hotel
- Onsite cafe
The Wayfarer is a good choice if you want to be right in the middle of the Pacific Beach action.
Formerly the Blue Sea Beach Hotel, the property has been renovated and sits immediately along the boardwalk, with private balconies, an outdoor pool, and easy access to the beach.
All rooms at The Wayfarer feature a private balcony, microwave, and coffee maker. It is a treat to be able to start your morning sipping coffee while enjoying a peaceful ocean view before the beach starts to get crowded!
Why I Recommend The Wayfarer
The location makes it easy to spend the morning at the beach, and then head out to enjoy the many other things to do in San Diego. The Wayfarer’s Pacific Beach location puts it close to local attractions like SeaWorld San Diego and Belmont Park in Mission Beach. It is a great place to stay if you want to be central to everything and have easy access to the beach.
What to Know Before Booking
Pacific Beach is lively, so don’t choose this hotel expecting a secluded resort atmosphere.
If you want quiet, look toward Del Mar or La Jolla. If you want activity and easy beach access, The Wayfarer is much more appealing.
8. Ocean Park Inn

ocean park inn At-A-Glance
- Location: 710 Grand Avenue, San Diego
- Best for: Families looking for a beachfront Pacific Beach hotel
- Beach access: Across the boardwalk
- Pool: Yes
- Oceanfront rooms and suites
- Free breakfast
Ocean Park Inn is another strong Pacific Beach option, particularly if you’re looking for a more casual beachfront hotel with family-friendly conveniences.
The hotel is directly along the Pacific Beach boardwalk, with renovated rooms and suites, a heated pool and spa, beach access, and complimentary breakfast.
One of the cute amenities at this hotel is their Community Beach Bin, where you can share sand toys and other beach essentials with other guests.
Why I Recommend Ocean Park Inn
The combination of beach location, breakfast and renovated accommodations makes this an appealing choice for families who don’t need a full-service resort.
Some rooms also have balconies or patios with ocean views, and select suites include kitchenettes.
What to Know Before Booking
There is no onsite restaurant, although the hotel has relationships with nearby restaurants.
The Pacific Beach location is also active and lively, so again, this is more about being close to the action than escaping it.
9. Surfer Beach Hotel

surfer beach Hotel At-A-Glance
- Location: 711 Pacific Beach Drive, San Diego
- Best for: Families looking for a beachfront Pacific Beach hotel
- Beach access: Across the boardwalk
- Pool: Yes
- Oceanfront rooms and suites
- Great restaurants nearby
Surfer Beach Hotel is a good option if your priority is location over luxury. While the rooms are clean and bright, they are pretty basic, but the views are worth a million bucks!
The hotel sits directly on the Pacific Beach boardwalk, putting the sand, surf, restaurants, and beach activities right outside your door.
Why I Recommend Surfer Beach Hotel
This is the kind of hotel I’d consider for travelers who want to spend most of their time outside exploring rather than paying for a high-end resort. Room rates are usually considerably lower than other beach hotels in the area.
The location also puts you within walking distance of Belmont Park, restaurants, and other Pacific Beach attractions.
What to Know Before Booking
This isn’t the property I’d choose for a luxury vacation. But if your priority being as close to the waves as possible, the location is hard to beat!
10. Ocean Beach Hotel

Ocean Beach Hotel At-A-Glance
- Location: 5080 Newport Avenue, Ocean Beach
- Best for: Budget-conscious travelers
- Beach access: Across the road from the beach
- Pool: No
- Rooms include a microwave and refrigerator
- Upper level terraces to take in the view
- Free parking
If you want a San Diego beach hotel without paying resort prices, Ocean Beach Hotel is one of the options I’d consider.
The older property has a great location near the beach, Ocean Beach Pier, restaurants and shops. It offers clean and updated rooms and all the perks of being on the beach. Although this is a budget-friendly option, you’ll still receive the great service you’d expect to find at a more expensive resort. Note however, do you have to cross the road to get to the sand.
Rooms are set around a central courtyard, and some offer ocean views. I love that parking is free, too!
Why I Recommend Ocean Beach Hotel
The biggest selling point is location. You can walk to the beach, pier, restaurants, and shops without needing to get back in your car.
It’s also considerably more affordable than many of the luxury resorts on this list.
What to Know Before Booking
This is a budget-oriented property, not a luxury resort.
And despite being marketed as a beachfront hotel, you do have to cross the road to reach the sand. That’s worth knowing before booking if you’re specifically looking for a hotel directly on the beach.
11. Beach Terrace Inn

Beach Terrace Inn At-A-Glance
- Location: 2775 Ocean Street, Carlsbad
- Best for: A true Carlsbad beachfront stay
- Beach access: Directly on the sand
- Pool: Yes
- Oceanfront rooms and suites
- Complimentary beach chairs, umbrellas, and toys
- Free continental breakfast
- Family-friendly atmosphere
If your definition of a beach hotel is “I want the sand directly outside my door,” Beach Terrace is a winner. Quite literally terraced down the side of a coastal cliff, Beach Terrace Inn is one of the best San Diego beach hotels located right on the ocean!
The boutique hotel sits directly on the sand in Carlsbad, with spacious rooms, private beach access, an oceanfront pool, and spacious accommodations.
The front of the hotel is nondescript, tucked away on a quiet residential street in Carlsbad. I almost drove right past it! But beyond the entrance is a gorgeous hotel with sweeping views and multiple levels of ocean view rooms, as well as a large pool deck and terraced gardens.

Originally constructed as an apartment building in the 1960s, the hotel rooms and suites are exceptionally large. They have been completely upgraded with modern, bright interiors. Most feature a balcony or private cabana on the pool deck.
Beach Terrace Inn features a private beach entrance and valet service to set you up with complimentary beach chairs, towels, and umbrellas. Also free of charge is use of boogie boards and kids’ beach toys. (There’s a big bucket of them they can choose from!) Complimentary morning beach yoga is offered on Sundays.
Why I Recommend Beach Terrace Inn
This is a very different experience from staying at a large resort. The hotel is intimate, the location is exceptional, and some rooms are essentially perched right above the beach.
What to Know Before Booking
Carlsbad is north of central San Diego, so this is better suited to families who want a coastal vacation or are combining their beach stay with North County attractions such as LEGOLAND California.
Also, some rooms and beach/pool areas require stairs, so check the property’s current accessibility information if that is important for your trip.
12. Cape Rey Carlsbad Beach

Cape Rey Carlsbad Beach At-A-Glance
- Location: 1 Ponto Road, Carlsbad
- Best for: Families seeking upscale resort amenities near the beach
- Beach access: Across the street
- Pool: Yes
- San Diego beach resort overlooking South Carlsbad State Beach
- Modern craftsman-style rooms, many with ocean views
- Complimentary bike rentals, beach chairs, and umbrellas
- Spa and fitness center
- Onsite restaurant serving California cuisine
Cape Rey Carlsbad Beach Hotel is a Hilton beach resort in San Diego, located across the street from South Carlsbad State Beach. It is a good choice if you’d like resort amenities and ocean views without paying for a hotel directly on the sand.
This craftsman-style hotel embraces a laid back Southern California lifestyle, with spacious, modern rooms and plenty of resort amenities.
Although Cape Rey Carlsbad is not located right on the sand, there are endless ocean views. The hotel’s expansive pool area overlooks the Pacific, as do many of the rooms and the hotel’s restaurant, Chandler’s Oceanfront Dining.
► Be sure to check out our complete guide to the Best Beaches in San Diego for Families.
Ponto Beach is across the street, and Cape Rey offers complimentary beach packs with beach umbrellas, chairs and towels, as well as shuttle service to the shore (Memorial Day through Labor Day). These convenient amenities make Cape Rey one of the most enjoyable resorts in San Diego by the beach.
Why I Recommend Cape Rey Carlsbad Beach Hotel
I particularly like this as an option for families who want to combine a Carlsbad beach vacation with nearby attractions such as LEGOLAND California.
The hotel provides beach chairs, umbrellas, towels, and seasonal shuttle service to the shore, making the fact that it’s across the street less of an inconvenience.
What to Know Before Booking
If your number-one priority is literally sleeping on the beach, choose Beach Terrace Inn instead.
Cape Rey is better for travelers who want a resort-style hotel near the beach.

13. Scripps Inn La Jolla

Scripps Inn At-A-Glance
- Location: 555 Coast Boulevard South, La Jolla
- Best for: A quieter La Jolla coastal getaway
- Beach access: Across the street from the beach
- Pool: No
- Free beach chairs, boogie boards, and sand toys available for guests to use
- Walking distance to restaurants and shops in La Jolla Village
- Big, beautifully decorated rooms
Located just 15 minutes north of downtown San Diego and in the heart of La Jolla Village, Scripps Inn La Jolla is a good choice if you want to stay close to the ocean while also being within walking distance of La Jolla’s restaurants and attractions. We loved being able to walk everywhere from the hotel when we stayed here.
The hotel is literally right across the street from the shore. The views are stunning, but you have to step outside to see them. I wish the rooms had balconies or windows facing the beach, but that was not a deal-breaker when we stayed at Scripps Inn La Jolla.

Why I Recommend Scripps Inn
The 14-room inn sits above the Pacific and has a peaceful, intimate atmosphere that feels very different from a large resort.
It’s also an excellent location for exploring La Jolla on foot.
What to know before booking
There is no pool, and this is not a traditional full-service resort. The ocean views are beautiful, but I wished our room had a balcony or windows facing the beach. That wasn’t a deal-breaker for me, but it is something I’d consider when choosing a room.
I’d choose Scripps Inn for its location, charm, and intimate atmosphere rather than its amenities.
14. L’Auberge Del Mar

L’Auberge Del Mar Hotel At-A-Glance
- Location: 1540 Camino Del Mar, Del Mar
- Best for: An upscale coastal getaway
- Beach access: Bluff-top hotel with walking access to the beach
- Pool: Yes
- Onsite bar and restaurant
- Steps away from Del Mar Village
- Some rooms have fireplaces
- Full-service spa
- Tennis courts
Seeped in sophistication, L’Auberge Del Mar is a boutique hotel located in the heart of Del Mar. It is one of my favorite choices for travelers who want a quiet, sophisticated coastal getaway rather than a traditional family beach resort.
This San Diego beach hotel is reminiscent of a private, coastal estate with beach-inspired rooms and beautiful decor. The hotel sits above the beach in the heart of Del Mar Village, putting you within walking distance of restaurants, shops, and the coast.
We’ve stayed at L’Auberge a few times and absolutely love it for a peaceful coastal retreat. The hotel has 121 guest rooms and suites, each featuring elegant furnishings, marble bathrooms, and private balconies or patios with garden, village, or coastal views. There is a big pool with a bar where you can order drinks and food to enjoy poolside.

With a focus on healthy living, the hotel also features the 5,000 square foot full-service spa – Spa L’Auberge – plus a fitness center, two tennis courts, and a pool. The hotel is located on the cliffs above the beach, but has a lovely walking path down to the shore. You are also right on the edge of Del Mar Village, close to many great restaurants and fun things to do in Del Mar.
Why I Recommend L’Auberge Del Mar Hotel
The atmosphere is upscale without feeling overly formal, and the location makes it easy to combine beach time with exploring Del Mar.
What to Know Before Booking
This isn’t a hotel where you simply walk from your room directly onto the sand.
The property is above the beach, with a path down to the shore. That’s an important distinction if your top priority is direct beachfront access.
15. Alila Marea Beach Resort

Alila Marea Beach Resort At-A-Glance
- Location: 2100 N Coast Highway 101, Encinitas
- Best for: Luxury travelers and couples
- Beach access: Bluff-top resort with access to Ponto Beach
- Pool: Yes
- Luxury oceanfront resort overlooking South Ponto Beach
- Stunning infinity-edge pool
- Multiple ocean-view dining options
- Full-service spa
Perched atop dramatic coastal bluffs overlooking South Ponto Beach, Alila Marea Beach Resort is one of the most luxurious oceanfront resorts in North County San Diego. It combines stunning Pacific views with modern, upscale rooms, a pool, spa, dining, wellness experiences, and a sophisticated coastal design.
Opened in 2021, the resort is very new and modern. Guest rooms feature floor-to-ceiling windows, spa-inspired bathrooms, and private balconies that maximize ocean views. The resort’s centerpiece is its stunning infinity pool overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
Although Alila Marea is more of a romantic getaway destination, if you have older children this hotel can work. What makes it great is its incredible location, easy beach access, and upscale amenities.
Why I Recommend Alila Marea
If you want luxury and ocean views, this is one of the most compelling properties on the list.
Many rooms have private balconies or patios overlooking the Pacific, and the resort’s bluff-top setting gives it a very different feel from a traditional hotel directly on the sand.
An Important Note for Families
Alila Marea currently limits room occupancy to two guests in many accommodations, and the property is particularly geared toward adults seeking a refined coastal escape.
That makes it a great recommendation for couples, but not one of my first choices for a family vacation with children.
Map of San Diego Beach Resorts

What About Mission Bay Hotels?
Mission Bay is home to several excellent resorts on the water, but I don’t include them in this list because Mission Bay is a different kind of beach experience. Staying on the bay is very different from staying on the Pacific Ocean.
The bay has calm water, family-friendly activities, boating, and resort-style properties, while the hotels in this article are focused on oceanfront hotels.
If you’re specifically looking for a resort on Mission Bay, see my guide to Hotels on Mission Bay in San Diego.

For most travelers, I would choose Hotel del Coronado. It combines a spectacular beachfront location with extensive resort amenities, restaurants, pools, activities, and one of the most iconic settings in Southern California.
For families who care more about spending time in the water and on the beach than having a large luxury resort, I particularly like La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club.
What are the best San Diego hotels directly on the beach?
Some of the strongest options include Hotel del Coronado, La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club, Beach Terrace, Pier South Resort, Pacific Terrace, and La Jolla Shores Hotel.
Always check the property’s current room and beach-access information because “oceanfront” and “beachfront” aren’t interchangeable.

What is the best area to stay for a San Diego beach vacation?
Coronado is my top choice for an all-around family beach vacation. La Jolla is excellent for families and outdoor activities, Pacific Beach is best for a livelier vacation, and Del Mar is a great choice for an upscale, quieter getaway.
Are San Diego beach hotels expensive?
They can be, especially during summer and other peak travel periods. However, there are options at several price points, including smaller hotels in Ocean Beach and Pacific Beach.

Final Thoughts: San Diego Hotels on the Beach
With 70 miles of coastline stretching from Mexico to Orange County, San Diego is home to some of the world’s most beautiful beaches. Throw in its year-round sunshine, warm climate, and amazing sunsets, and who wouldn’t want to stay at one of these San Diego resorts?
But the thing to remember is, there is no single best San Diego beach hotel for everyone.
If you want the iconic experience, choose Hotel del Coronado. If your family wants to spend as much time as possible on the beach and in the water, I’d look closely at La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club or La Jolla Shores Hotel. For a classic Pacific Beach vacation, Pacific Terrace is one of my favorites, while Beach Terrace is hard to beat if you’re looking for a true stay-on-the-sand experience in Carlsbad.
And if you’re looking for something more sophisticated, L’Auberge Del Mar, Tower23, or Alila Marea may be a better fit.
The most important thing is to look beyond the words “oceanfront” and “beachfront.” Check exactly where the hotel sits, how you reach the sand, what the neighborhood is like, and whether the property matches the type of vacation you want.

That’s the best way to find a San Diego beach hotel you’ll actually love staying in.
Overall, San Diego beach resorts provide major conveniences, such as eliminating the need to hunt for beach parking and the ability to pop in and out of your room between beach time and fun activities at the resort. These amazing places to stay on the beach provide everything you need for the perfect getaway – stunning views, easy beach access, great restaurants, and endless activities on and off the water.
If I could live on the beach, I would. But alas, the occasional family vacation at the shore is the closest I will come. That’s okay! San Diego has so many fantastic beach resorts there is always somewhere new to try.
