Planning a San Diego April getaway? Spring is one of the most beautiful times of year to visit!
April brings blooming flowers, warming temperatures, and plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy. The days are longer and you’ll find lots of family-friendly events happening across the region. Best of all, April is still before peak summer tourism, so crowds are generally lighter than what you’ll see during summer vacation months.
If you’re planning a visit to San Diego in April 2026, I’ve gathered the best things to do, plus details on weather in San Diego in April and what to expect during your trip.
San Diego Weather in April
April is when San Diego really starts to feel like spring. Days are sunny and mild, with comfortable temperatures perfect for outdoor adventures.
You can expect:
-
Daytime highs: around 67–70°F
-
Evenings: cool, usually in the mid-50s°F
-
Rain: possible early in the month but generally light and infrequent
-
Sunshine: plenty of clear days and longer daylight hours
The ocean is still chilly, but even if you don’t want to swim, beaches are perfect for relaxing, walking, tide pooling, or watching surfers.
Top Tip: Pack layers! Mornings and evenings can still feel cool, especially near the coast, while afternoons are often warm enough for short sleeves.
Best Things to Do in San Diego in April
1. Visit The Flower Fields in Carlsbad

April is peak bloom season at The Flower Fields in Carlsbad.
Open for just a few months each year, nearly 50 acres burst into vibrant color with rows of ranunculus flowers. You can walk through rows and rows of blooming flowers, take guided wagon tours, and capture incredible photos of this seasonal wonder. There are lots of activities for kids, too, like the butterfly garden and sweet pea maze.
The Flower Fields are open every day between March 1 and May 10, 2026, but the best time to visit the Carlsbad Flower Fields is during the month of April when the fields will be hitting peal bloom. Early mornings and weekdays tend to be the least crowded.
Check the official Carlsbad Flower Fields website and click the “Bloom Status” button for current conditions and to make reservations.
2. Visit SeaWorld San Diego

Spring is a great time to visit SeaWorld before summer crowds arrive.
The park combines rides, exhibits, shows, and more, making it a favorite destination for families. In recent years, the park has added several big roller coasters, including Emperor, Manta, Electric Eel, Journey to Atlantis, and Arctic Rescue. This is great news if you are visiting San Diego with teens! Younger kids enjoy interactive exhibits (like touching bat rays!) and the numerous rides for kids.

SeaWorld San Diego in April is also when you can catch the Seven Seas Food Festival, held this year February 27 through April 26, 2026. During the festival, you can sample international-inspired dishes throughout the park while enjoying live entertainment, adding an extra layer of fun to your SeaWorld visit!

3. Go Whale Watching

April marks the final stretch of gray whale migration season in San Diego. Many whales are heading back north toward Alaska with their calves, making sightings common early in the month.
Whale watching tours depart from downtown San Diego, La Jolla, and Mission Bay and offer the chance to see whales, dolphins, sea lions, and beautiful coastal scenery. Tours typically last two to four hours, and almost all are very kid-friendly.
Even if you don’t take a boat tour, you might spot whales from shore at scenic viewpoints like Cabrillo National Monument or Torrey Pines.
4. See San Diego on the Hop On Hop Off Trolley

Riding the San Diego Hop On Hop Off Trolley is the perfect way to maximize your time and get around, all while learning some cool facts about the city. Honestly, it’s a tour I recommend taking any time of year.
► See why the hop on hop off trolley tour is the best way to see San Diego in one day.
The fully narrated bus tour lets you get on and off at any of 11 stops, including Balboa Park, the Gaslamp Quarter, Coronado Island, USS Midway, Old Town, Little Italy, and many more.

5. Spend a Day at the San Diego Zoo

April is an ideal time to visit the San Diego Zoo. Comfortable temperatures make walking the zoo’s 100-acre grounds much easier than hot afternoons during summer in San Diego.
Animals are often more active in the cooler weather, and gardens throughout the zoo are especially lush this time of year. Indoor exhibits and shaded pathways provide plenty of spots to take a break if the afternoon sun gets warm.
Top Tip: The zoo is hilly, so comfortable shoes are a must. This is especially true if you’re pushing a stroller!
Kids love riding the Skyfari Aerial Tram and it’s a fun way to get across the park. The Kangaroo Bus – a complimentary, non-narrated transportation service – makes it easy to hop on and off at different stops around the zoo.

6. Explore Balboa Park

April is a lovely time to explore Balboa Park, thanks to blooming gardens and comfortable temperatures that are ideal for strolling between museums and outdoor spaces. Visiting Balboa Park is one of the best free things to do in San Diego!
There are 18 museums in Balboa Park, plus beautiful gardens, playgrounds, a carousel, the Spanish Village Art Center, Balboa Park International Cottages, the Old Globe Theatre, and of course, the San Diego Zoo. The park is so big, there’s even a free tram to help you get around.

Some of our favorite family-friendly museums in Balboa Park include the San Diego Natural History Museum, Fleet Science Center, and Model Railroad Museum. The San Diego History Museum is small but has some great exhibits, and it’s free enter for everyone year-round!
To see the flowers in bloom, be sure to visit:
- Alcazar Garden
- Botanical Building
- Japanese Friendship Garden
- Inez Grant Parker Memorial Rose Garden
7. Head to LEGOLAND California and LEGOLAND Water Park

Located in nearby Carlsbad, LEGOLAND California offers more than 60 interactive play areas, shows, and kid-friendly rides.
When my son was younger, we visited LEGOLAND all the time! The park’s emphasis on creativity and learning through play makes it an ideal destination for families with younger kids. Not only can they build things with LEGO bricks, but they can wander through Miniland USA, which features more than 30 million LEGO bricks in its fascinating displays.
LEGOLAND California also has a water park, which opens for the season on March 21, 2026, so it will be waiting for you in April!

The main thing to know is that although the LEGOLAND Water Park is separate, it is only accessible through the park. Therefore, you cannot buy just a ticket to the water park; you must purchase admission to LEGOLAND in order to access the water park, too. LEGOLAND-only tickets do not include admission into the water park but can be upgraded to include same-day admission. This is a nice add-on, especially on hot days – though it does add significantly to the price.
8. Walk Around Seaport Village

Seaport Village is a fun waterfront destination full of restaurants, shops, and live entertainment. In April, the area hosts the Spring Busker Festival, where talented street performers entertain visitors with music, juggling, magic acts, and more.
It’s a great place to stroll along the harbor, grab a bite to eat, and watch boats sail across San Diego Bay.
9. Take a Coastal Hike

April’s cool temperatures and blooming wildflowers make it one of the best months for hiking along San Diego’s coast. Many trails offer stunning ocean views and opportunities to see dolphins, seabirds, and migrating whales.
There are many kid-friendly hiking trails in San Diego. April’s cooler mornings are perfect for spending time on the trails.
Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve is one of our favorite spots to hike, with dramatic ocean views and a variety of family-friendly trails. The park features breathtaking ocean views and unique coastal landscapes.
Some other popular hiking spots you may want to explore include:
- Mission Trails Regional Park – More than 8,000 acres with miles of trails at varying levels of difficulty.
- Cabrillo National Monument – Tide pools, whale watching, and scenic vistas.
- Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve – Easy trails with waterfalls and wildlife.
- San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve – Trails here pass through different types of wetlands environments, including salt marshes and freshwater areas.
Top Tip: Inland temperatures tend to be warmer than the beaches, so consider heading east on cooler days.
10. Visit the Birch Aquarium

Located in La Jolla, Birch Aquarium is a wonderful stop for families visiting San Diego in April. The aquarium offers indoor exhibits featuring jellyfish, sea dragons, and colorful reef fish, along with outdoor tide pool displays overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
Kids especially love the hands-on tide pool experiences where they can see sea stars and other marine creatures up close.
11. Catch a Padres Game at Petco Park

Spring marks the start of baseball season, so catching a San Diego Padres game is a great thing to do if your family is into baseball! Petco Park is located right downtown near the Gaslamp Quarter and waterfront, and the stadium’s family-friendly atmosphere makes it a great way to spend a few hours for fans of all ages.
Kids will love the Park at the Park, an open grassy area with a playground and plenty of space to run around.
An evening game with cool ocean breezes is one of the most fun ways to experience San Diego like a local.
