Boarding the Admiral Hornblower
The San Diego 90-Minute Narrated Harbor Tour combines beautiful coastal scenery, interesting and informative narration, and a relaxing boat ride into a single 90-minute excursion. It is truly one of my favorite sightseeing experiences in San Diego, and I’ve done many!
The tour departs from the downtown San Diego waterfront near the Embarcadero. Boarding is simple, and I recommend arriving a little early so you can choose your preferred seating area before departure. Boarding begins 30 minutes before scheduled departure.
One of the things I liked most about this cruise is the boat itself. The tour takes place aboard the newly refurbished and very sleek Admiral Hornblower. This is the same vessel often used for dining cruises and special events on the bay.
Unlike some sightseeing boats that offer limited seating, the Admiral Hornblower provides plenty of comfortable indoor and outdoor spaces for you to enjoy throughout the cruise.
Inside, you’ll find spacious dining-style seating with large tables and oversized windows that make it easy to enjoy the views. Outside, your family can relax on open-air decks and patio seating areas while taking in the fresh ocean breeze.
My husband and I grabbed a table inside, but spent plenty of time wandering outside to enjoy the fresh air and get closer views when we passed something particularly interesting.
The boat also features a full snack bar with hot and cold food items, beverages, and cocktails available for purchase.
Exploring San Diego Bay
One thing I particularly appreciate about this tour is that it covers the same scenic route around San Diego Bay as some longer harbor cruises but condenses the experience into a single 90-minute excursion.
So instead of having to decide between a one-hour or two-hour cruise, you get a comprehensive overview of the harbor in 90 minutes.
The captain provides live narration throughout the tour, sharing interesting facts about San Diego’s history and waterfront attractions. The tour that takes you past landmarks such as the USS Midway Museum, Star of India, Seaport Village San Diego, and Cabrillo National Monument on the Point Loma Peninsula.
You’ll learn about the city’s maritime industry, military presence, architecture, and marine conservation efforts while enjoying views of sea lions, pelicans, and herons.
On the day we took the tour, there were a bunch of different spots where harbor seals and other marine animals were gathered. The captain spent a good amount of time stopped nearby so everyone could take photos.
I found the narration to be one of the highlights of the experience. It adds context to everything you’re seeing and helps you appreciate just how much history and activity surrounds the bay.
Top Tip: If you’re planning to take the cruise, I recommend choosing a clear day whenever possible. Sunny skies provide the best visibility and make sitting outside a real treat.
Even on warm days, temperatures on the water can feel cooler than on land, so bringing a light jacket is a good idea. Sunglasses and sunscreen are also helpful if you plan to spend much of the cruise outside.
What You’ll See on the Harbor Tour
When you take any harbor tour that covers both the north and south sides of San Diego Bay, you can expect to see many of the city’s most iconic waterfront landmarks. These include:

Kids love spotting sea lions and checking out passing boats, while adults appreciate the scenic views and informative narration. A harbor cruise also works well for multi-generational groups.
With both indoor and outdoor seating available, families can easily move around the boat to find the views and seating arrangements that work best for them.
Also worth noting, while you can bring a stroller onboard, access to outer decks is via stairs only.

If you are driving to the waterfront, be sure to leave extra time for parking. City Cruises does not own or operate any parking lots in the area, but metered parking is available on both sides of North Harbor Drive. There are also several paid parking lots nearby, including an ACE Parking lot on the pier next to the USS Midway Museum.
