Spoiler alert: It absolutely is!
But that shouldn’t come as a big surprise. San Diego – aptly nicknamed “America’s Finest City” – boasts an enviable mix of sandy beaches, sunny weather, and an array of attractions sure to appeal to just about everyone.
But this destination is not without its drawbacks. And while I’m happy to share all the things that make San Diego a great place to visit, it’s only fair that we talk about those drawbacks, too.
I’ve lived in this area for more than 25 years, so I’ve experienced the good, the bad, and sometimes even the ugly. Read on for my full breakdown and tips for visiting San Diego.
Is San Diego Worth Visiting?
When deciding whether San Diego is worth visiting, a lot depends on what you’re looking for in a destination. San Diego’s beaches and warm climate are a huge draw, however, some people find the city a challenge to get around. Additionally, San Diego’s high cost of living translates into pricey accommodations, dining, and activities.
For many, the benefits easily outweigh the challenges. San Diego offers an incredible variety of experiences. On the other hand, if budget is a concern, there may be other destinations that better suit your needs.
10 Reasons to Visit San Diego
If you’re looking for reasons to visit San Diego, they aren’t hard to find. Below are ten compelling highlights of this popular destination.
1. Year-Round Beautiful Weather
Let’s start with the obvious reason San Diego is worth visiting – its near-perfect weather! With an average temperature of 66°F in the winter and 76°F in the summer, San Diego’s climate is ideal for outdoor activities any time of year. It never gets too hot and rarely gets too cold to enjoy everything the city has to offer.
Even in the winter months, you can still enjoy sunny skies almost every day. And while it might be too chilly to play in the waves (typically the Pacific Ocean gets too cold from about November through May), it’s almost never too cold to sit on the sand and enjoy the views or take a walk along the shore.
If you are visiting from a place that experiences cold winters, this makes San Diego especially appealing and worth a visit – just to be able to escape to palm trees and sunny days!
2. Beautiful Beaches
San Diego’s coastline stretches for 70 miles and is home to some of the most picturesque beaches in the United States. Surfing, sunbathing, snorkeling, and tide-pooling are just a few of the activities you can enjoy. Personally I just love to swim and bob in the waves when the water is warm.
One of our favorite beaches is in Del Mar. In addition to its lovely stretch of sand, it is located close to Del Mar Village with all its great restaurants, as well as Torrey Pines State Park.
If you are interested in water sports like jet skiing or boating, plan to spend some time of Mission Bay. Mission Bay Park offers more than 25 miles of shoreline perfect for walking, swimming, kayaking, and picnicking. Rent bikes, paddleboards, or even a sailboat for an active family outing. The water here is calm and safe. You can easily spend a whole day enjoying all the outdoor activities available in this great spot along Mission Bay.
3. Balboa Park
Balboa Park is a cultural oasis in the heart of the city. At 1,200 acres, it is one of the largest urban parks in the United States. Balboa Park is home to museums, gardens, theaters, the International Cottages, playgrounds, and more.
Just walking around the park and taking in the gorgeous architecture is an activity in itself. Don’t miss the iconic Botanical Building or the San Diego Natural History Museum.

4. The San Diego Zoo
The world-famous San Diego Zoo is a highlight for families and animal lovers alike. With over 12,000 animals representing over 680 species and subspecies and lush, naturalistic habitats, visiting the zoo is an unforgettable experience.
Although the San Diego Zoo is located in Balboa Park, it really is a stand-alone destination. With more than 100 acres to explore, plan on spending an entire day so you don’t have to rush. It should also be noted that there are lots of hills, so it may take extra time getting around, especially if you have to push a stroller or keep little kids rounded up for the walk.

5. Family-Friendly Amusement Parks
We’ve already mentioned the San Diego Zoo, but San Diego is home to many other great theme parks and attractions, too. Legoland California is a great option if you have younger children. Another popular family-friendly attraction is SeaWorld San Diego.
You can also check out Belmont Park. Belmont Park is an old school boardwalk amusement park. Located right on the boardwalk at Mission Beach, Belmont Park is one of the quintessential Southern California Amusement Parks. It is home to the historic Giant Dipper Roller Coaster, and many other rides. You can play arcade games, laser tag, mini golf, or even zip line.

6. Coronado Island
Located just a short ferry ride across the bay from downtown San Diego, Coronado Island is famous for its pristine beach and the historic Hotel del Coronado. There are tons of fun things to do on Coronado Island with kids.
Although only a few minutes away, Coronado is technically its own city and many people consider visiting it a day trip from San Diego. It has a lovely downtown area and you can stroll along Orange Avenue and pop into the quaint shops and cafes.
Coronado has one of the best stretches of sand in Southern California, lots of family-friendly activities, great restaurants, and the world-famous Hotel Del Coronado perched on its shore. Take some time to stroll through the property and visit the hotel’s Ice House Museum.
There is also a great little museum right in town. The Coronado Museum of History and Art is free to enter and fairly small, so it won’t take long to go through but will add a ton of perspective to your visit to Coronado Island. For a quick stop, it is truly one of the best things to do in Coronado!
7. La Jolla’s Marine Life
Just a short drive north of downtown San Diego is La Jolla Shores, one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline on the west coast.
La Jolla is a treasure trove for nature enthusiasts. Whether you’re kayaking through sea caves or snorkeling alongside leopard sharks, this area is teeming with marine life. It’s one of the best places to head for a day of seaside fun. Let the kids splash in the gentle waves, search for sea creatures in the tide pools, check out the sea lions, or simply relax on the sandy shores of this picturesque beach.
Snorkeling and ocean kayaking are popular activities in La Jolla, since there are caves and cliffs and all sorts of beautiful scenery to check out along the coast. My husband, son, and I went on the La Jolla Sea Caves Kayak Tour and absolutely loved it. La Jolla is also home to Birch Aquarium.
8. Delicious Mexican Cuisine
As a border city, San Diego offers some of the best Mexican food in the U.S. From taco stands to upscale eateries, the flavors here are unforgettable.
You can find great Mexican food almost anywhere you go in Southern California, but my absolute favorite place to go to eat is Old Town San Diego. Yes, it’s a little touristy (see below for cons regarding if San Diego is worth it) but there are so many amazing spots in such a small area. We have started with margaritas and chips and salsa at one location and then moved on to dinner at another.
9. USS Midway Museum
For history buffs or anyone intrigued by military life, the USS Midway Museum is an aircraft carrier turned floating museum now permanently docked on the Embarcadero in downtown San Diego. The USS Midway is America’s longest-serving aircraft carrier, serving from 1945 to 1992.
We’ve visited this museum several times over the years, most recently when my son was in high school and very interested in learning about the military. You can explore aircraft carriers, sit in fighter jets, and learn about naval aviation through interactive exhibits. Admission includes an audio tour featuring insights from sailors who served onboard.

10. Proximity to Other Destinations
One of the best things about San Diego is its proximity to so many other fantastic destinations. Though there are countless things to do in San Diego, if you are staying for more than a few days you might want to venture out of town.
San Diego’s location makes it easy to explore nearby attractions. From Disneyland in Anaheim to Mexico’s Baja California to Los Angeles, there are plenty of options for day trips from San Diego.
Why Not To Visit San Diego
While San Diego has plenty to offer, this destination is not without its downsides.
One major drawback is the cost—hotels, dining, and activities can add up quickly, making it less accessible for budget travelers.
Additionally, public transportation is limited, which means getting around often requires a car or expensive rideshare services. Plus very few hotels offer complimentary airport transportation.
And if you do have a car, parking can be costly. If you are staying downtown, parking at your hotel can be as much as $50 per night in addition to your room rate and any resort fees. And once you go out and about, parking can be a challenge to find, especially at San Diego’s beaches, Seaport Village and all along the waterfront, and at Balboa Park on busy days. Be prepared to circle until you find a spot.
Another consideration is that some areas can feel overly touristy, especially during peak travel seasons. Crowds at popular attractions like the San Diego Zoo or SeaWorld can detract from the experience.

How many days should you spend in San Diego?
To fully experience San Diego’s highlights, plan for at least three to five days. This allows ample time to explore the beaches, major attractions, and nearby areas.
Is San Diego an expensive vacation?
Yes, San Diego can be pricey, especially when it comes to accommodations and dining.
However, there are budget-friendly options like free beaches and affordable taco joints. I definitely recommend venturing outside the city and away from the coast to find the best deals. There are also lots of free things to do in San Diego that can help defray the cost.
Is San Diego a walkable city, and what are the other transportation options?
While certain neighborhoods like downtown and the Gaslamp Quarter are walkable, many attractions are spread out, making a car or rideshare service necessary for convenience.
If you stay at a hotel in downtown San Diego near Seaport Village for example, you will be able to walk to many popular sights without having to worry about transportation, and can even hop on the ferry to Coronado Island.
This area also offers easy access to the San Diego Trolley (San Diego’s public transportation system), which you can ride to Old Town, the Mexican border, and nearby suburbs. We recently stayed at Sunland San Diego RV Resort which has direct access to the San Diego Trolley and were able to get around town very easily using public transit.

In my honest opinion, San Diego is not only worth visiting, you’d be crazy not to want to spend time here! There are so many fun things to do in this beautiful city.
However, it’s worth considering the few but potential downsides, such as cost and accessibility, before making your plans. Ultimately, whether San Diego is the right destination for your vacation depends on your preferences and priorities. But if you do decide to visit, I can promise the city’s charm is sure to leave a lasting impression and you will have a wonderful time exploring San Diego.
