That said, it’s definitely not perfect, and whether it’s “worth it” really depends on what kind of theme park experience you’re looking for. In this article, I’ll break down what we love about Knott’s Berry Farm, what we don’t, and whether it deserves a spot on your Southern California itinerary.

Is Knott’s Berry Farm Worth It? My Quick Answer
The short answer is yes, Knott’s is 100% worth it.
This is especially true if you are looking for thrill rides. I don’t see Knott’s Berry Farm as a park meant to replace a visit to Disneyland, but rather provide a whole different experience. Knott’s has its own personality and charm. The park feels more relaxed, less polished, and a little more old-school in the best possible way.
One of the biggest reasons people choose Knott’s over Disneyland is the price. Tickets are usually significantly cheaper, and you can often find deals online or bundle options that make it even more budget friendly for families.
If you live in Southern California and are locals like us, season passes to Knott’s also cost less than Disneyland Magic Key Passes, and many come with extra perks too like free parking, no blackout dates, and bring-a-friend discounts.
I also really liked that Knott’s feels distinctly Californian. From the historic Ghost Town area to the famous boysenberry-inspired food, it has a charm and history that makes it feel different from the big corporate parks nearby.
Would I choose it over Disneyland for a once-in-a-lifetime Southern California vacation? Probably not. But would I absolutely recommend it as a more affordable and fun alternative or add-on park? Definitely.
What I Love About Knott’s Berry Farm
1. The Roller Coasters Are Seriously Good
If you love thrill rides, Knott’s absolutely delivers. Rides like GhostRider, Xcelerator, and Silver Bullet are major highlights if you enjoy thrill rides. At the same time, there are still plenty of attractions for younger kids, especially in Camp Snoopy, as well as family-friendly classics like my personal favorite, Calico Mine Ride.
GhostRider is widely considered one of the best wooden roller coasters in California and honestly lives up to the hype. It’s fast, intense, and surprisingly smooth for a wooden coaster.
Other major highlights include HangTime with its beyond-vertical drop and Silver Bullet, which is still one of the smoothest inverted coasters around.
Compared to Disneyland, Knott’s definitely leans more toward thrill rides, which can be a huge plus for teens and adults.
2. It’s Much More Affordable Than Disneyland
This is honestly one of the biggest reasons people consider Knott’s in the first place.
Tickets are generally much cheaper than what you’ll pay at Disneyland. For families trying to visit Southern California on a budget, the savings can be pretty significant. And if you buy tickets online in advance, you can usually save a significant amount off the gate price.
3. Ghost Town Has Real Character
One thing I genuinely appreciate about Knott’s is that it doesn’t feel like it’s trying to copy Disney.
Ghost Town is actually one of the most unique themed areas in any of the Southern California theme parks. It is actually the original section of Knott’s Berry Farm from the 1940s, where people used to visit while they were waiting for a table at Mrs. Knott’s chicken dinner restaurant. The first major ride at Knott’s was the Calico Mine Ride in 1960.
Ghost Town has old western buildings, live actors, train robberies, and a fun historic atmosphere tied to the park’s roots. It feels nostalgic in a way that’s hard to explain unless you’ve visited.
4. Awesome Seasonal Events
If you happen to visit during Halloween season, Knott’s Scary Farm is one of the best Halloween theme park events in the country.
The haunted mazes, scare zones, and overall atmosphere are genuinely impressive and much more intense than Disney’s Halloween offerings. It’s become a major Southern California event for a reason. For horror fans, this alone can make Knott’s worth visiting!
Then during the holiday season, Knott’s Merry Farm completely transforms the park with Christmas lights, festive shows, holiday food, snow effects, and seasonal décor throughout Ghost Town and Camp Snoopy. It is one of the best things to do if you are visiting Orange County during Christmastime.
Both events add a lot of extra value and are honestly some of the best times of year to visit the park.
5. The Food Is Better Than Expected
I’ll be honest – I don’t usually expect much from theme park food, but Knott’s actually has some really solid options.
The park is famous for its boysenberry treats, fried chicken dinners, and seasonal food festivals. There’s a nice mix of classic comfort food and fun snacks throughout the park. And the portions are big, so it is easy to share.
During our visit right before the holidays, we got a Thanksgiving-themed bread bowl from Miner’s Mac & Spuds in Ghost Town. It was unique and tasty. My husband and I shared it for lunch and it kept us plenty full until dinnertime!
6. The Entertainment Is Surprisingly Good
One thing I think Knott’s doesn’t get enough credit for is its entertainment lineup. Depending on the season, there are numerous live shows, musical performances, comedy acts, western-style street performers, and family-friendly stage shows throughout the park.
During seasonal events, the entertainment really steps up and helps the park feel more immersive overall.
The Ghost Town actors especially add a lot of personality and make the park feel more interactive and lively compared to some other regional theme parks. We love going to shows in the Bird Cage Theatre, which is modeled after the historic theater in Tombstone, Arizona. It opened at Knott’s Berry Farm in 1954, and even after many remodels maintains its rustic, old school charm.
7. Nearby Hotels Are Much More Affordable
Another huge advantage Knott’s has over the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim is the hotel pricing in Buena Park.
Hotels near Knott’s Berry Farm are often significantly cheaper than hotels near Disneyland, especially during summer and peak travel seasons.
That can make a big difference for families trying to save money on a Southern California vacation. You can often find larger rooms, free parking, and complimentary breakfast for much less than what you’d pay around Disneyland Resort. For budget-conscious travelers, this adds a lot to Knott’s overall value.
Knott’s Hotel, the official hotel of Knott’s Berry Farm (which is located adjacent to the park) even offers a free shuttle to the Disneyland Resort to entice people to stay!
What I Don’t Love About Knott’s Berry Farm
1. The Park Can Feel Dated in Certain Areas
Part of Knott’s charm is its history, but there are definitely areas that feel older and less polished than Disney parks.
Some sections could probably use updates, and the overall atmosphere isn’t nearly as immersive or detailed as Disneyland. If you’re expecting Disney-level theming everywhere, you may be disappointed.
2. Operations Aren’t Always the Smoothest
This is one area where Disneyland definitely has the advantage.
Ride operations at Knott’s can sometimes feel slower, and lines may move less efficiently than you’d expect. Sometimes unloading and reloading of rides can take a hot minute.
Depending on the day, wait times can still get very long, especially for the most popular coasters.
Fast Lane helps, but it’s another added expense.
3. It Can Get Very Crowded
People often assume Knott’s is much less busy than Disneyland, but that’s not always true.
Weekends, holidays, and summer can get extremely crowded, especially because Knott’s is popular with locals and annual passholders.
If possible, visiting on a weekday during the off-season makes a huge difference.
4. Fewer Attractions for Very Young Kids
While Camp Snoopy is great for younger children, the park definitely skews older compared to Disneyland. That’s because it really is about the thrill rides here!
If you are traveling with toddlers or very little kids, you’ll find there’s less to do overall.
5. No Parking Tram
This might sound minor, but if you’re used to parking at Disneyland and their transportation setup, the parking experience at Knott’s can feel less convenient.
Knott’s Berry Farm does not have a tram system, so depending on where you park, you may end up walking a long way to the entrance. This can really hit hard at the end of a long day inside the park when everyone is exhausted and you have to walk back to your car.
6. Food Can Be Expensive
While Knott’s is generally cheaper than Disneyland overall, their food prices are still pretty high. Individual meals are on average a few bucks higher than those at other parks.
Meals, snacks, drinks, and seasonal treats add up quickly, especially for families. The food quality is solid and as I mentioned before portions are typically big enough to share, but don’t expect this to be a particularly cheap day once you start buying meals and snacks throughout the park.
So, Is Knott’s Berry Farm Worth It?
Honestly, yes – especially if you’re looking for a more affordable, less overwhelming, or most thrill ride-centric alternative to Disneyland.
Knott’s Berry Farm offers world-class roller coasters, unique history, fun seasonal events, and a more relaxed atmosphere that many visitors actually end up preferring. It may not have Disney magic or the same level of immersion, but it also doesn’t come with quite the same level of cost or planning stress.
Visiting Knott’s Berry Farm is one of the best things to do in Orange County. I think Knott’s works especially well for:
