A trip to Disneyland doesn’t have to be all about the theme parks. Anaheim is just a short drive away from many of the best beaches in Southern California, and I highly recommend building a beach day into your vacation itinerary.
As someone who spent years living in Orange County before moving to other parts of Southern California, I’ve spent a lot of time exploring the coastline. Right after San Diego (yes, I am partial!), I genuinely think Orange County has the best beaches in the state.
Whether you’re looking for a relaxing afternoon by the ocean, a place for kids to run around and build sandcastles, or a fun break from the crowds, there are plenty of fantastic beaches within easy reach of Disneyland.
Best Beaches Near Disneyland for Families
Here are the best beaches near Disneyland for families, along with some tips and what makes each one worth visiting.

Not surprisingly, Southern California beaches are busiest on summer weekends. For the best experience, visit on a weekday or arrive before 10 a.m. Parking lots can fill up quickly, especially at Huntington Beach, Laguna Beach, and Newport Beach.
1. Huntington Beach
Distance from Disneyland: Approximately 15 miles (20-30 minutes)
Huntington Beach is my top pick for the best beach near Disneyland, and truly one of my favorite beaches overall.
Known as Surf City USA, Huntington Beach is one of the closest and most popular beaches near Disneyland. Its wide sandy shoreline, iconic pier, and family-friendly atmosphere make it a favorite beach.
You’ll find plenty of space for setting up your gear, playing beach games, and taking walks along the shore. Be sure to leave time to walk out on the pier and stroll around downtown, which is right across the street. HB’s downtown area features numerous restaurants and ice cream shops.
One of the things I really like about getting to Huntington Beach from Disneyland is that you can do it without getting on the freeway. It’s a pretty straight and easy cruise down Harbor or Beach Boulevards and some side streets.

Tips for Visiting Huntington Beach:
- Parking is available in several lots along Pacific Coast Highway, but weekends and summer afternoons fill up quickly. I’ve seen major traffic jams on PCH of cars waiting to get into parking lots. There’s also street parking available, but you’ll need to arrive early to find a spot close to the beach.
- For families, the area south of the pier tends to be slightly less crowded, but you’ll be further away from the pier.
- Consider renting bikes and riding along Huntington Beach’s expansive paved boardwalk.
2. Bolsa Chica State Beach
Distance from Disneyland: Approximately 16 miles (25-30 minutes)
Bolsa Chica State Beach is often overlooked in favor of neighboring Huntington Beach, but it’s a fantastic choice for families seeking a more relaxed beach experience. It’s on the same stretch of sand as HB, but you won’t be near the pier.
The main reason I love going to Bolsa Chica State Beach is Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve, which is located adjacent to the beach, right across the street.
This wonderful reserve provides opportunities for birdwatching and nature walks. There are over 1300 acres of coastal habitat surrounding a saltwater estuary, and the whole area is connected by wooden boardwalks. Hiking trails, guided tours, and a nature center are the highlights. You can combine a visit to Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve with a few hours at the beach for the perfect day away from the Disneyland Resort.

Tips for Visiting Bolsa Chica State Beach:
- Bolsa Chica typically has excellent parking availability compared to some other Orange County beaches.

- The beach is popular with surfers, so watch for surf activity near designated areas.
- Sunset views here are especially beautiful.
3. Newport Beach
Distance from Disneyland: Approximately 20 miles (25-35 minutes)
Newport Beach offers a classic Southern California beach experience with beautiful scenery and a relaxed atmosphere. The area around Balboa Peninsula is especially popular with families. The waves are generally moderate, making it a good choice for older children and teens.
The big bonus for visiting Newport Beach is the Balboa Fun Zone, which is one of the oldest coastal amusement parks in California. Located on the waterfront, you can check out the rides, play games at the arcade, rent water sports equipment, catch a harbor cruise, or just enjoy great food and drinks.
Honestly, if you are visiting on a day trip during your Disneyland vacation, I wouldn’t normally recommend paying to go on the rides. The exception might be the Balboa Fun Zone Ferris Wheel. It is cute, historic, only $6 a ride, offers amazing views of the harbor, and they let you go around for a long time so you get your money’s worth!
The Balboa Fun Zone is also where you can embark on a harbor cruise, fishing trip, or take off for a day trip to nearby Catalina Island. We took this Newport Beach Sunset Cruise and it was absolutely spectacular (and pretty inexpensive, too)!

Tips for Visiting Newport Beach:
- The Balboa Peninsula is one of the best areas for families, with easy beach access and plenty to do nearby.
- Ride the Balboa Ferry for a fun and inexpensive family activity. It is only $2 per adult and $1 for kids.
- Street parking in Newport Beach can be challenging during peak season, so public lots are often easier.
- Take a walk to the end of Newport Pier for great views and dolphin spotting opportunities.
4. Corona del Mar State Beach
Distance from Disneyland: Approximately 22 miles (30-40 minutes)
For families looking for calmer waters and a quieter atmosphere, Corona del Mar State Beach is an excellent option. It is located just south of Newport Beach, so a pinch further away from Disneyland.
Protected by cliffs and a curved shoreline, Corona del Mar often has gentler surf than many neighboring beaches. It is ideal for younger kids who want to splash in the water or play in the sand. Picnic tables and nearby amenities make it easy to spend a full day here.

Tips for Visiting Corona del Mar:
- The large parking lot directly above the beach makes access easy for families with strollers and beach gear.

5. Laguna Beach
Distance from Disneyland: Approximately 25 miles (35-45 minutes)
There are numerous beaches in Laguna Beach you can visit and almost every one of them is special. But for the purpose of keeping this list of best beaches near Disneyland simple, I am just going to round them all up under the title of Laguna Beach. Laguna Beach is known for its stunning coastline, art galleries, and picturesque coves. While there are several beaches to choose from, Main Beach is one of the most family-friendly and easiest to access. It is also closest to downtown shops and restaurants, and the many art galleries in Laguna Beach.
Perched on the bluffs just above the shoreline, Heisler Park offers paved walking paths, grassy picnic areas, and panoramic ocean views at every turn.
Heisler Park is especially great for younger kids thanks to its wide paths and open spaces where they can safely roam. Along the way, you’ll find public art installations, benches for taking in the view, and staircases that lead down to nearby coves if you want to explore further.
It’s also one of the best places in Laguna Beach for a casual picnic; grab takeout from downtown and enjoy lunch with a view.

Tips for Visiting Laguna Beach:
- Main Beach is the easiest option for first-time visitors and families, but the sand can get crowded.
- Explore nearby Heisler Park for beautiful ocean views and walking paths.
- Parking can be limited, especially in summer, so consider using the city’s free trolley service when available.
- If you are visiting Disneyland in summer and want to plan a beach day, don’t go to Laguna Beach unless you can get up and get there early. I cannot stress enough how bad the traffic gets and you will regret your decision any time after 10 a.m. or so.
6. Crystal Cove State Park
Distance from Disneyland: Approximately 25 miles (30-40 minutes)
Crystal Cove is technically part of Laguna Beach, and while I said I wasn’t going to list individual beaches in Laguna, this one deserves its own spot on the list!
Crystal Cove combines beautiful beaches with natural beauty and outdoor adventure. You can enjoy tide pooling, hiking trails, and miles of relatively undeveloped coastline. It’s a great beach to visit if you want to take in the beauty of Southern California’s coast.
One of the highlights is exploring the tide pools during low tide, where kids can spot sea stars, crabs, and other marine life.
But what I really love and what sets Crystal Cove apart are the historic beach cottages. They add a ton of charm to the area.

Tips for Visiting Crystal Cove:
- Check tide charts before your visit if you want to explore the tide pools.
- Wear sturdy shoes for rocky areas near the tide pools.
- Parking is available in designated lots, and a shuttle may operate during busy periods.
- Stop by the famous Crystal Cove Shake Shack for a treat!
7. Doheny State Beach
Distance from Disneyland: Approximately 35 miles (45-60 minutes)
Located in Dana Point, Doheny State Beach is one of the most family-friendly beaches in Orange County, and a great spot to watch surfers. It’s pretty far south in Orange County, so the drive from Disneyland will take a bit longer, but it is a great beach.
Once owned by oil tycoon, Edward L. Doheny, this beach property was donated for public use in 1931 as California’s first ever state beach. In 1963, it was officially named Doheny State Beach.
At its northern end sits a world renowned surfing beach, sand volleyball courts, Doho Cafe, and a five-acre lawn with picnic facilities and lots of space for kids to play.
Doheny Beach is also very close to Dana Point Harbor, which is a cute waterfront area with a marina, restaurants, and shops. is also a hub for dolphin and whale-watching cruises if that is something your family is interested in experiencing.

8. Seal Beach
Distance from Disneyland: Approximately 18 miles (25-30 minutes)
Seal Beach is actually located in Los Angeles County, but since it is on the south end of the county right near Long Beach, it is actually a lot closer to Disneyland than some other Orange County beaches.
Seal Beach offers a small-town beach vibe that feels worlds away from the crowds of Anaheim. It has a relaxed atmosphere, charming Main Street, and iconic wooden pier. Seal Beach is an excellent option if you want a quieter beach day without traveling far from Disneyland.

If you’re only planning on one beach during your Disneyland vacation, I recommend Huntington Beach as the best all-around choice. Its combination of proximity to Anaheim, family-friendly amenities, and vibrant pier and downtown atmosphere makes it a fantastic way to experience a classic Southern California beach scene.
But every beach on this list has a different vibe, and if you’re driving and want to combine your beach day with other activities, that is going to help you decide which location to head to.
There are tons of amazing things to do in Orange County, and going to the beach is literally at the top of that list. Adding a beach day to your Disneyland vacation is one of the best ways to experience Southern California beyond the theme parks.
