Solvang is a fantastic destination for families, offering a variety of activities that both kids and adults can enjoy. Here are some of the best family-friendly things to do while visiting:
1. Explore Solvang and Its Danish-Style Architecture
Solvang’s Danish roots are on full display with its colorful buildings, half-timbered houses, and iconic windmills. Take a leisurely stroll down Copenhagen Drive and admire the quaint shops and restaurants that bring a European flair to this small Californian town. Don’t forget to snap some photos in front of the town’s famous windmill!
To be perfectly honest, a good chunk of Solvang’s charm and the reason we like to visit is to wander the charming streets. Its Danish architecture is what makes this town so unique.
Solvang is also a great place to pick up unique souvenirs. Browse the quaint gift shops along Main Street and throughout town for Danish-inspired items, including handcrafted jewelry, traditional Danish clothing, wooden clogs, and more. You can also find beautiful Scandinavian home décor, making it the perfect place to bring home a piece of Denmark.
And while you’re there, check out the Solvang Carousel. Located near the heart of the town, the carousel features colorful, hand-carved wooden animals for kids to ride. It’s a classic family activity that will bring a smile to everyone’s face.
The Little Mermaid statue is another wonderful downtown Solvang landmark you won’t want to miss.

A visit to Solvang wouldn’t be complete without trying some traditional Danish pastries. There are many Danish bakeries in town, such as Olsen’s Danish Village Bakery, to sample delicious treats like Danish kringles (flaky pastries filled with almond paste). We like to pair them with a cup of coffee and relax at a table outside.
Our favorite spot is the Solvang Bakery. One of many great local bakeries in town, I they have wonderful pastries and a nice little outdoor seating area.
3. Visit the Hans Christian Andersen Museum
This cute little museum is located upstairs in The Book Loft Building in downtown Solvang. It is operated by the Ugly Duckling Foundation, a non profit organization established to foster public understanding and enjoyment of Hans Christian Andersen and his work. The Museum features books and exhibits about legendary author Hans Christian Andersen.

4. Tour the Solvang Vintage Motorcycle Museum
For something a little different, check out the Solvang Vintage Motorcycle Museum. My girlfriend and had a great day of wine tastings and shopping on a recent wine country weekend getaway to Solvang and Santa Barbara.
