Scripps Inn La Jolla Reviews: Rooms, Amenities, Location & More
There’s something to be said about the personal service that comes with a stay at a smaller property.
During our recent visit, the hotel staff was exceptionally friendly and eager to help. One person even came out of the lobby to offer assistance when they saw me lifting a bag out of the trunk of my car!
Winter guests enjoy watching gray whales, while throughout the year guests also enjoy views of frolicking dolphins, seals, and sea lions. The Inn is also walking distance to La Jolla Cove, the Children’s Pool, the Museum of Contemporary Art, and of course La Jolla’s many restaurants and boutiques.
Just short drive away you’ll find all of San Diego’s popular family attractions. SeaWorld San Diego, Old Town, the San Diego Zoo, Seaport Village San Diego, and Legoland are all within easy reach of La Jolla. It is also very close to Del Mar and the Del Mar Fairgrounds.

Scripps Inn Guest Rooms
Scripps Inn La Jolla has just 14 rooms and suites, making this a quiet and comfortable stay with lots of privacy and attention when you need it.
With beautiful California coastal décor in sea-inspired hues of blue and tan, the Scripps Inn’s rooms are a luxurious sanctuary. All guest rooms have been recently updated and include new A/C units, flat-screen TVs, Keurig coffeemakers, and signature bath products. Suites have a kitchenette and separate seating area. Some rooms have a fireplace, which is a lovely amenity if you are visiting during the colder months.
While not all rooms have a private balcony or patio (this is admittedly a bummer) all have big windows and doors that open up to the hotel’s exterior walkways. Some rooms have outside tables where you can enjoy the ocean views. .
We stayed in a King Deluxe room on the 2nd floor, which offered expansive views of the ocean and cliffs. It had one king bed, but still plenty of room for a roll-away if you need it. There was also a sitting area, fire place, and a table and chairs which proved the perfect spot to enjoy our coffee (okay, Diet Coke) in the morning.
There a variety of room styles at Scripps Inn La Jolla – King Deluxe, Deluxe Junior Suite, Garden Suite, and the beautiful Ocean Vista Suite. Even if you aren’t staying in a room with a direct view of the water (these of course come at a premium) you are never more than a few steps away from the beach.
Amenities & Recreation
While there is no pool at Scripps Inn La Jolla, you will always be just a short walk away from the waves. A stay at this hotel comes with complimentary use of beach chairs, umbrellas, towels, sand toys, and boogie boards.
If lounging is your thing, you can enjoy the hotel’s sun deck with sweeping views of the coastline from the comfort of cushy patio furniture.
Bikes are also available to rent from the hotel.
Scripps Inn is located directly across from the beach, so take advantage of it and enjoy a walk or run! There is a wide sidewalk running along the coastline in La Jolla, making the most of the area’s dramatic cliff side and ocean views. An early morning walk will let you revel in the area in solitude, or join the crowds at sunset and treat yourself to the breathtaking view of the sun dipping into the ocean.
Final Thoughts: Scripps Inn La Jolla
Where the crashing waves and jagged cliffs of La Jolla’s beautiful coastline meet the quintessential Southern California beachfront hotel – that’s Scripps Inn. It is a beautifully-appointed, unique hotel where the location definitely rules.
The first time we stayed at Scripps Inn, a free continental breakfast was served every morning. Sadly, that perk has gone away, but the hotel is still a good value if you want a relaxing beach vacation.
While definitely family-friendly, Scripps Inn’s serene atmosphere might not be the best choice for families if you are looking for a more vibrant, kid-centric environment. Be sure to check out these San Diego Oceanfront Resorts or these Hotels on Mission Bay if you want a more full-scale beach resort experience for your San Diego family vacation.
